I know getting information(dimensions, mpg figures etc) on current models can be obtained easily from most car magazines, but does anyone know of a source for older models?

Yeah, getting information on 'older' cars isn't that easy, but it depends upon how old 'old' is?
Some data for my car (1993 polo) is impossible to find on the internet. I bought a book from Transport Source Books a few years back, which is a collection of photocopied articles from period magazines like Autocar and Motor. They are full of information from dimensions to braking data, and max speeds in each gear to MPG at varying speeds. Unfortunately, the company has ceased trading, and the only place I have seen them for sale is second hand on EBay.

www.parkers.co.uk has a lot of information for most cars 1985 onwards in their Review section.
The CBCB here goes that far back too, but may not contain quite as much data

I'm not sure how old you mean, but HonestJohn's car by car breakdown has quite a lot of information about vehicles up to a couple of decades old.
Top Gear's web site used to have (like, a few weeks ago) a huge repository of all road tests and specifications for cars going back years, but since they've re-done the site I can't find it. I hope it's still there somewhere, I've used it for a lot of research in the past.

I have every copy of Top Gear mag. The information in the back may not be 100% accurate but it's a start.
If the OP wants to know anything specific, i can have a look.

Thanks for your suggestions everyone - I'll start searching now!

Look in public libraries and secondhand book shops for a Haynes manual.
