Which autoboxes are the most reliable at high milages please.
I am thinking more of medium range secondhand cars than say Mercedes or Lexus level. At the moment I have a 1993 Volvo 440 1.8
Thanks.

My old Volvo 940 diesel had a 4 speed ZF box which lasted faultlessly for 13 years and 180K miles, but I think with autoboxes driving technique is crucial as they contain friction clutches and micro switches. Lots of stop start, or worse frequent use of kickdown changes will fairly soon knacker them IMO. Also proper fluid changes at say 10K intervals assist longevity. Mind you I'm no expert on the subject.

I thought the 900 series used the Jatco box?

Thanks thallium81 That is very helpful, especially the auto driving advice. Having enjoyed a manual 940 I wouldn't mind an auto 940/960. Best wishes. Vollyone.

My 940 definitely had a ZF with 4th speed lockup but I know there rere other makes of autobox on these cars according to my Haynes manual which went when I sold the car so I can't remember the makes.

Ah, I've just remembered, the petrol models had a different set up with,I think an overdrive operated by a button on the gear shift.
