Hello,
I'd be grateful for advice. I need to drive from M62 jct 24 (just W of Leeds) to central Reading, to arrive for about 1230. What route is best?
What about the route home, departing Reading 1200-1300?
Thanks.

M1 to Nottingham
A42/M42/M40 to High Wycombe
A404/M4 to Reading.
Alternatives that also work, M1 to Northampton A43/M40 to High Wycombe
M1 to Leicester M69/A46/M40 to High Wycombe
But are generally slower.
Back home in reverse, a long way to go to just turn around and go back back ....

Send someone else if you ask me. Reading is a hole of a place - I lived there for 28 years and am glad I came out. The longest part of your journey will be getting into central Reading from the outskirts.

I have lived near Reading for 30 years, and I wouldn't disagree with Truckersunite (though it's a better bet than Slough or Basingstoke).
I've done all these routes often and the M69 route is a bit slower but there's nothing in it between the M42 and A43 routes. If the traffic is clear you can do it in 3.5 hours, though you should allow longer.
If you come in on the A4 keep going straight on into Reading. Turn right into Sidmouth Street, just after the Royal Berks Hospital on the left and a Murco garage on the right: left at the bottom of Sidmouth St. and then next right at a filter into the Queens Road car park, unless you have a private car park to go to.

Which bit of Reading?
The nearer it is to Caversham, eg Holiday Inn, main shopping area, rail station, Thames Water etc (use postcode finder on www.multimap.com) the more you should consider coming out of Reading over Caversham Bridge, and then up through Sonning Common, Nettlebed and Watlington to J6 of M40.
If it's the South/East side of Reading then use M4/A404M as already suggested.

Sorry - reverse the above - but the advice still stands! About 35 mins from M40 J6.

Going across country when you leave the M1 is tempting and shorter in distance but I have always found that M1 M25 M4 is quicker providing you choose a suitable time of day i.e avoid the rush hours.
|
Thanks. I'll try the M42 or A43. Don't fancy the M25.

M40 to J9 A34
Follow south ring road which is initially sign posted to Henley on Thames and then
Benson
Wallingford
Woodcote
Caversham
Reading
M40 J9 to Reading Train Station takes me around 35 minutes.

Agree with the above if you're going to Caversham or anywhere in reading north of the Thames.
The road mentioned by NoFM2R is the A4074 - it bypasses Benson, Wallingford (thank the Lord) and Woodcote, and has some dangerous bends after a long straight stretch betwen Crowmarsh and Reading.
Did I see somewhere that No FM2R is the new nom de plume for Leamington Spa's famous son? If so, Mark, tell us what it means, unless it's a puzzle! If it is, you can expect lots of rude guesses fronm the sillier element of the forum (like me).

Ah the 13 bends of death, I have fond memories of those on my 600 sports bike.
