Are you loosing coolant as well?
no, no water loss.....(?)
Sorry about the "loosing", my finger lost it's connection with my brain.

Do you do a lot of short journeys where the engine doesn't really get a chance to warm up?
no, it does say about 20 miles to work and then back again at night 5 days a week then out over the week end..
Not sure about Astra's but older peugeots often get gunk in the oil filler from the condensationnot getting burnt off - i'd suggest a good run combined with an italian tune up and see if it gets rid of it. If it returns a compression check may help the diagnosis.

How thick is the white film? Is it just a thin layer, or really mayonaised up?
When was the oil last changed, and can you remember what was used?
It *could* be that the engine breather is partially blocked and might want cleaning/replacing.

Its quite thick almost like glue yes good idea a block test could be the best way to see if any thing is wrong with the head if not a trip down national garage as they seem to do an oil/filter change for only a tener i will give it a go and let you know how i got on cheers

If your car isn't using coolant, then I think there is nothing to worry about.
One reason why you might still be getting a build of condensation and oil emulsion is that either the thermostat has been removed, or one which opens whil the coolant is too cool has been fitted, thus preventing your engine reaching its correct operating temperature.
