Hi Folks,
I'm interested in buying a used Jaguar XKR. I know that the new model is due next year and that that might be a better time to buy, however, I'd really like to get one now.
I think that I'd like to get a face-lifted 2003 4.2 version. I think that it should hold its value reasonably well when compared to slightly older 4.0 cars. I know that I would like SatNav and the adaptive cruise control as a minimum in terms of extras.
I had thought of a Jaguar XKR 100 which seems to have every extra but I'm not sure what depreciation will do to this car relative to newer 4.2 models.
Would anyone recommend any other extras in particular to look out for? Any comments on what to look out for in terms of mileage, faults, etc? Does my choice sound like a good one? Is my strategy sound?
I've spotted a 2003 (03) 4.2 XKR with the extras I'd like. The only thing is, the mileage is around 40K. I'm assuming the majority of this mileage will be motorway. Anyone got any opinion as to whether a car with this sort of mileage after 2 years is an ok buy or should I be wary.
Any advice gratefully received.
Cheers,
JAH
P.S. I joined and posted over the weekend but it seems the site had technical problems and my post and account were deleted. Just in case you've a feeling of deja vu ;-)

I was fortunate enough to have a blast in one of these last week (all be it a convertible) - new model with just 4,000 on the clock. Obviously very quick and a great supercharger sound, new 6 speed auto is a vast improvement on the 5 speed, but cabrio has very prominent scuttle shake and the whole car was showing it's age. Compass in the rear view mirror was noticeable in peripheral vision and I kept mistaking it for an overtaking car. Over 13 miles of mainly motorway driving it averaged 17 mpg.

I wouldn't say 40K over two years is high mileage. I's the top end of average but for a big engined car, it's barely run in yet.
Better that low mileage, in my view anyway.

Presumeably (if it's all straight) it'll still have a year of w'tee left, so you'll get a year to figure out of anything major is wrong.
As for strategy - I'm guessing that this car will cost half? of it's new price, so worst case, you can't lose any more than that!
Have you owned this kind of (expensive executive) car before? I'm of the view that they're great if you (or a close relative etc) is a Jaguar (or whatever) mechanic, otherwise the bills could be horrendous. Check out how much things like tyres and exhaust systems cost.

Hi Bill Payer,
No, I haven't owned a car as expensive as the Jag before. I expect that things like tyres and exhausts will be pretty pricey though I doubt that it'll be needing a new exhaust any time soon. I'll need to see how the tyres look as I expect it's been through at least a set of tyres already.

Xileno,
I agree that it's not much for a car like a Jag. Trouble is a lot of people seem to think that low mileage is preferrable which is a bit of an issue on resale.
It shouldn't matter too much to me as I won't do a huge mileage in any case and it won't seem so high for the age after I've had it for a couple of years.
Cheers,

I don't think that the auto box has changed recently but I could be wrong. I think the XKRs have a Mercedes 6 speed. Does anyone know for sure?
I can imagine that the fuel consumption is fairly fierce. However, considering the size of the engine it does pretty well IMHO. I currently drive a Renault Laguna Auto V6 and it doesn't do much more than 20mpg around town either!

Would be glad to be corrected, but I doubt this is right. Merc's have had 5 speed boxes for some yrs (I've got one) and are in the process of moving to 7 speed.

IIRC the orginal XK8/R had a five speed auto, they are now fitted with the same ZF box as fitted to the S type. A colleague (who owns an S type auto) drove the five speed auto box XK8 last year and said compared to the 6 speed it was a dog - constantly hunting for the correct ratio, the 6 speeder is a vast improvement.
