It is now compulsory in some EU countries to have a refective jacket in in your car Austria and Italy for sure I think Germany later this year. One other unrelated subject the much vaunted German toll system for trucks that uses high end technology and cost millions {against the sticker in the window in Austria}does not work very well and does not pick up trucks that are driving without paying.

Note that it's one reflective jacket/vest per person in the car. Make sure you have them for the kids too.

I picked up a winter-weight high-vis coat in Makro for pennies which lives in the boot of the car along with 3 vests, all also picked up for peanuts in Makro. The vests fold down to the size of a couple of packets of ciggies.

More useful than a triangle or extinguishe IMO (although I have those too).

In Spain they must be in the driving compartment, and it's best to have them clearly visible.

P.S. Only one triangle is required for non-Spanish registered vehicles. Two required for Spanish vehicles, but to avoid difficulties with the police it's suggested two triangles are carried.

I didn't know it was one per person. Lucky I didn't get pulled over...

The nanny state strikes again.

Reggie!! Tongue in cheek verrrrrrrry deeply, there!!

When you see the number of people, unlucky enough to have broken down/whatever vehicles. having no consideration for their own safety, or others, by walking or just standing around on the highway, they need as much nannying as we can give them!!

& thats in THIS country!!

I carry a relective vest in the car. Inter alia, it is useful should one have to jump out of the car to unscramble a traffic jam. The wearing of a reflective jacket gives one a great air of authority - I hope they are never made compulsory here.

I never go inter alia these days....

An increasing number of truck and bus drivers wear them while on duty, and the lady manager at my local Tesco Express has to wear one when she steps out of the door, onto the pavement, to receive and sign for a delivery.

How soon before all pedestrians have to wear one just to put the bins outside the garden gate?

Don't be daft.

There is a legal duty of care on an employer to ensure that their staff don't get squashed whilst performing their duties. It's for this reason that businesses close off their delivery bays to the public and ensure their staff are visible and have appropriate protective clothing. When this falls down, people get killed. B&Q found this out to their cost at their Poole superstore when an elderly lady was crushed to death because they failed to cordon off an area in which a forklift was used and failed to have appropriate marshalling of the forklift. The fine was one of the largest seen in a H&S case. (note, this not naming and shaming, it's a case that has been heard and settled in a public court.)

There has been quite alot of debate on this subject on another site, personally, if i am required to wear one for work then I will, I can only see the benefits of them I'm afraid. Even better is the fact that they get covered in grease etc and not my clothes. Everyones a winner ;o)

I don't mind wearing one at work, because I often end up in dangerous situations with traffic around me, but where will it end?

Maybe all cars should be painted in reflective dayglo yellow.....you know, just in case, and maybe dark blue and black should be withdrawn in the interests of H & S.

Seriously, although it is not a bad idea to carry one, just in case, to be compelled to do so is yet again the thin end of the wedge in my opinion. Also one per car should suffice, and education of the dangers of being at the roadside would be better I think.

Jam sandwich syndrome: The accident caused by a motorist's attention being drawn to a highly visible police car or similar, resulting in a rear-end shunt into the car in front.

One jacket syndrome: The squashing of a child or spouse in dark clothing as the motorist's attention is drawn to the driver in his hi-viz jacket as he stands by his car having instructed his family to cross to the safety of the hard shoulder/verge from the broken down car in the outside lane.

We are required to wear reflective vests at work and of course some are so dirty that the regular clothes underneath them are much brighter than the vests themselves. i personally don't see the need for them in my workplace, but if wearing one means that I am able to sue the pants of the company if I get squashed (and survive) then I am all for it. Winner indeed 8-)
