Garmin Streetpilot 2610 Sat Nav - Wee Willie Winkie
Afternoon all,

Does anyone has experiences of the Garmin Streetpilot 2610 Satnav unit?

I've got the chance of buying one second hand - with all the latest maps etc...

Any opinions of this model would be great.

Thanks,

DB

Before I slate it.......

How much are you paying, and why is the user selling?
Garmin Streetpilot 2610 Sat Nav - Wee Willie Winkie
He wants £200 for it. He's selling as he needs to finance the finishing touches on his camper van renovation...

He tells me someone else is going to look at it this evening so I may not even get a chance.....

Cheers.

I have it's predecessor the Streetpilot III. Main problem is the address entry takes a while and my software can't search on a postcode. Other than that it's great - very portable, finds routes quickly and recalculates quickly. Only got me lost twice, once was due to a road reclassification, the other was a road on the East coast which had been washed away! The Mapsource site will tell you the latest map version and you can compare this with that provided with the one you are being offered.

£200 isn't going to finance much of anything! There is some darker reason behind this sale IMHO!

I've got a 2620, which is the same except it has an internal 2 gig hard drive. Had it about a year now, and use it 4 or 5 times a day.

They're excellent units for basic navigation. They don't have all the latest (mostly useless) doodads, they're just a proper navigation unit. You need to make sure you have both mounts with it. One is a stick on unit, the other a little bean bag. I bolted mine down properly, and hard wired it to a permanent live with an external aerial. You also need to make sure it comes with the remote control and the power lead, as this houses the loadspeaker. Check what version of mapping it has, Ver.7 is the latest, and it costs about £100. Make sure it isn't nicked as well.

When they say postcode search, you can only search the first 4/5 characters, then you have to pick the street. Only the latest TomTom has a full postcode search where no other info is needed. You also can't put in speed camera details or generic points of interest as the software is unique to Garmin.

He sold it to someone else.....

So, I've just bought a TomTom 300 - which seems quite nifty to me. It's more for the other half when she has to go on site, but we'll both use it on days out etc etc.

Cheers.

Maybe, maybe not. £200 will buy a few bits and bobs of chrome for a nice VW finish though!!

I use one and had a StreetPilot III before. I find it excellent - I've used it extensively in Europe & the USA. It concentrates on being a good sat nav unit without any silly add-ons. It's considerably better than the SP III as it has a much faster processor.

£200 sounds too cheap. Check that the maps have the "unlock" code as without it you can't download them to the unit.

Big pink fluffy dice. Turns out the TomTom I won on ebay was a scam. Don't want to go into too much detail, but suffice to say I won't be getting the goods.

So, what does everyone think of the Medion 175? £279.99 currently at Halfords.

Cheers all,

Bad luck |DB. I hope you haven't paid and suffered financial loss, over and above not getting the item you bid on?

"You also can't put in speed camera details and points of interest, as the software is unique to Garmin."

You can!

Quote from file in question (from pocketgpsworld.com)

"Welcome to the UK Speed Camera map for Garmin mapping GPSRs.

This map is a transparent POI (Points Of Interest) map, which when installed on a Garmin mapping GPSR, will overlay the map(s) underneath, be they City Navigator, City Select, MetroGuide or just the basemap that comes with the unit."

Works well, and is regularly updated - and free.

OK Colin,

So from where can I download this transparent POI (Speed Camera) map for my StreetPilot III?

Garmin Streetpilot 2610 Sat Nav - grn
Jaws,

You can't with the SPIII. I have an SPIII and there is no POI support. The I3 (for example) is a different matter.

Under the heading "Garmin"

"We have an overlay for the POI (Points Of Interest) map, which when installed on a Garmin mapping GPSR, will overlay the map(s) underneath, be they City Navigator, City Select, MetroGuide or just the basemap that comes with the unit."

Somebody has converted the POI database (which is used with the newer GPSRs) into a map file which can be loaded via Mapsource into any Garmin GPSRs and sits as a tranparent map over the normal City Select/Navigator maps - I had it loaded in a GPS V last year, no problem. Don't have to use it now as currently based in Spain and the three cameras within a 200km radius are so clearly signposted that you deserve to be caught if you don't see them!

Argos - cheapest by far for TomTom 3 at the moment. Just bought a TomTom 5 for SWMBO's MINI at 375....Christmas Present - better be good or it'll be of t'window by boxing day....

PU, does she travel a lot that she needs the TomTom?

Or have you reached the stage that you really can't think of anything to get her!

One of my mate's is buying his missus a set of alloys for her Corsa! He insists that she will be delighted with them!
