I notice that complaints about main dealer charges are becoming more and more common. I wonder what proportion of new/nearly new cars are owned by individuals these days. I can only think that main dealers get away with it because lease companies pay the bills.
So, how many of those driving newish cars actually own the car themselves and how many are lease cars ?

My car's 54 reg and it's mine, but financed.

All my cars over the years have been mine and, apart from one occasion, bought for cash.
In the case of my last three VWs over the past 13 years I've used a solid, reliable and trustworthy small independent VW specialist on the odd occasion work has been required; however, straightforward semi-synthetic oil and filter changes cost just £15 at National and I use it for that purpose, along with half-price MOTs.

The S household has 2 cars.
The 6 year old Micra is owned by ourselves.
The Passat TDi was company supplied and has just gone back after 3 years. The replacement is on order and will be via a 4 year lease scheme with advantageous discounts via the firm including maintenance etc. No knowing much about under the bonnet stuff, I would be uncomfortable with having 2 sets of service etc bills so this is a good solution for us.

I've owned several of my own new or newish cars.
The cost and quality of main dealer servcing has kept me away from buying a "prestige" car. Paying several hundred pounds twice a year for servicing has put me off, along with the reputation of the local dealers. Whilst I know that under these euro rules you should be able to have you car serviced anywhere, its only going to cause grief should you need a warranty repair.

They're mine all mine, mine you understand. Well apart from SWMBO's.
|
Depends what you mean by newish. Mine isn't that new but it isn't an old rust bucket either.
Still, I do own it even though I wouldn't take it anywhere near a main dealer. Why have I posted here then you may ask? I don't know. At a guess, I'd say I like the look of my own typing.

I conversation, SWMBO will tell you that the 306 is hers whilst the V70 is "ours". Hmmm...! At least the Honda Hornet is mine!

Lock, stock, and barrel for every one I've ever had. I've never been fortunate enough to have had a company car or to have had rich parents.

There are some interesting statistics on car ownership etc from the RAC. www.rac.co.uk/business/information/fleet_statistics

Every single car I've owned has been "mine", bought with my own money.
Never took a company car option and I doubt whether I ever would in the future.

Me too - all bought with cash. Having said that, all but my current car were relatively cheap. Don't like any debt full stop and can't think of any circumstances in which I'd buy a car on finance.

Toyota Yaris - funded by and serviced by the dealership i work for.
My private cars are always older vehicles paid for in cash and serviced by myself.

Yes i own my Ford Ka thanks paid in full, none of that Finance APR rubbish!!!

"My" car is a company one but we own my wife's similar age Golf. The kids' cars and of course the Commer are older but we do own them

Left company car life about 10 years ago and went straight from Cavaliers into used prestige. Much better way of doing things. I had a 7 series from British Gas that had been chauffeur driven for three years!
All cars on the family fleet are owned outright - no finance. USe main dealers for Japanese cars and independents for European.

Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?

No wonder British Gas prices are so high. My employer's most recent CEO got rid of the previous CEO's Jaguar and his personal chauffeur 20 years ago. With the adoption of Mike Hammer's Business Process Re-engineering philosophy it was a case of "If thee wants owt doin' thee does it theesen!"

"interesting statistics"
Very. But I do wonder how they know that 81% of crashes are unreported...

I own the Mondeo, wife owns the Clio, recently sold my 2 year old motorbike (which I owned) and bought an 8 year old one, ZRX1100 (which I own) and put some money in the bank. So no finance though we do pay the car insurance (not the bike) monthly.
