New Sat Nav Suggestions - jbyron
Thinking of getting some sat nav, a portable one. Has anyone any suggestions or good/bad points to consider about any of them out there, any good/bad shops or software?

I'm considering Go/Tom Tom, just because its been advertised recently. Possibly will go for something from halfords. AM also looking at getting a PDA with some kind of software, or even a phone (O2 XDA or other networks' equivalent...).

Any thoughts?

You can go full monty with O2 xda with bluetooth GPs so that you can use outside car.
Also doubles as PDA with word excel and Blackberry if you really need it.
A good bit of kit

Dont go XDA - its really not up to the job or expandable enough

If you want just sat nav - stick with tom tom go

Or spend half the money on a PDA with TomTom5 which does exactly the same thing, a whole lot more, and leaves you with a pile of cash in your back pocket to spend on... beer or something.

I presume tom tom go and pda with tom tom will come with both cigarette lighter charger and AC charger.

Am I also right in thinking both will (can for PDA) come with integrated GPS to use outside of car?

What about speed camera overlays - is that something as an add on for tom tom, whichever device I use?

jbyron,

Am I right in thinking you're from St Helens? I remember reading something a while back suggesting that you are.

If so, The Link were doing a special deal on Tom Tom Go when I bought my phone a few months ago. It may be worth checking them out before going to Halfords.

TomTom 5 (on GO, PDA, Palm and Smartphone) supports point of interest warning, including speed cameras. TomTom charge for safefy cameras but www.pocketgps.co.uk have a free camera download that will work with TomTom and do what you want FOR FREE.

I find with the weight of the tom-tom go on the bracket it tends to vibrate quiet a bit, and i have tried several brackets. Check the weight of PDA and TTG.

I use Tom Tom Go and have just upgraded to latest map and software.

I like it - it will do 5 - 6 hours without recharging so no need for cables and wires most times and looks neat and tidy on the dash. To save battery it can be switched off on those parts of journey you do not need it.

Some built in sat nav I have heard of are rubbish but whilst Tom Tom is not absolutly perfect at times I find it very very good and handy - and ypou can move it from car to car.

You can have a version with camera warnings and with bluetooth you can link to your mobile. worth thinking about - for me I would not go with PDA unless I was doing a lot of walking or cycling.
