Pug 106 steering pump - Peter D
My daughter, now living away from home, has a pug 106 1998 R plate and is telling me that the steering feels heavier than it used to be. How heavy does a 106 feel if the pump fails or blows a fuse or may be a faulty relay. I sent the manual down with the car when she was last up here, Scotland, so any information fuse number and relay number and location would be appreciated. I know heavy is not a good description but she's a lassie. Thanks. Peter

If it's a 1.1 they don't have power steering as standard. (check tyre pressures? )

My old P reg 1.1 had power steering as standard, so unless they changed it a year later it may well have. IIRC it had an electric pump, but always felt light as a feather.

I also had a P-reg 106 with standard PAS (it was a special edition though). I always thought it was still quite heavy, but it definitely had it because it was only 3 turns lock to lock and made that hissing noise when it was at full lock. This also made me think it was hydraulic, not electrically assisted.

Peter, have just looked through Haynes manual 1882, J to S reg. No luck, I'm afraid. Electric motor driven hydraulic power steering is mentioned with the "no details available" note. I can find no trace of it in the wiring diagrams either. Thought if I posted it might save you buying a manual in vain ---

Thanks mjm, I have a manual ( same as yours from memory ) but I left it in the car so it is now in Birminghan. It has an EHPS system and have obtained details of which fuses and relays to check. Apparrently a corroded connector at the pump is the most likely cause so her boyfriend who is visiting her today can check it out and give me some feedback. Thanks again, Regards Peter
