Can anyone help or share advice relating to bodywork damage due to bird droppings?
After removing the offending material I'm left with a mark in the laquered surface. I've tried Auto Glym resin polish but can still see the mark. I would guess the laquered surface is damaged.

Anyone got any ideas how I can restore the surface? - its orient blue metallic on a new BMW 5 Series if that makes any difference.

I think the surface *is* damaged. You could try a bit of Farecla 3, but go easy with it, you might make it worse.

If the mark is just on the surface of the lacquer then Metallic T-Cut might help.

I had the same problem on a VW. Needed the bonnet re-lacquering but didn't bother in the end, too expensive.

Same trouble on both my parents BMWs, but not my Corsa. Maybe BMWs paint is poorer quality.

I wash bird poo off as soon as I can after noticing it - even if this means 02:00am at the end of a journey - for this reason.

Related story; Yesterday, I was riding my motorbike in to Aylesbury and my attention was drawn to two pigeons sat on the top of a tall lamp post with large arm and lantern overhanging the road. Just as I thought "I wonder what the chances of being hit by bird poo are...?" one of them oblidged! Thankfully the bike - which had just be cleaned and polished - is of course narrow and agile, so it missed!

I found the only thing that finally shifted a deep seated mark was Brasso. I've used it for years (judiciously!) and it takes lot of beating. Go easy for a start - or try on an inconspicuous area.

I agree about the problem with bird poo and the need for quick removal - especially on hot days - the sun accelerates the damage. I think I'm going to start carrying a spray bottle full of water and a sponge.

I understand that bird stuff is pretty bad at anytime but has a quick effect on today's water based paints. It is equally bad on the fabric of convertible hoods, bleaches the colour out.

As with others on here - I immediately wipe the offending doings off the car - having two kids means baby wipes are nearby.

Spent a good hour polishing and t-cuting a large dropping off my sister's metallic black car - all down the tail gate and bumper. Removed most of the damage, other than some marks on the bumper - this was only visible close up and looked like a slight imperfection. V nasty stuff. As with all metallics, be careful as you can go through the top coats easily !

Thanks for the tip, but I tried some silver polish instead. Surprisingly enough the blemish has almost disappeared. I have also written to BMW to see what they say.

Hi,
I had exact same problem on my 330.
Get autoglym paint renovator. It works ! Then re-apply the resin.

Rgds.

Brasso is basically the same subtance as T-cut so this is logical.

Good point - I've already had a similar problem with deposit on the roof but just managed to polish it out.
Many years ago I had a simlar problem with 240 Volvo and in the end Volvo resprayed the roof - I guess they felt that part of the problem was theirs.
I'll get in touch with BMW technical and see what they say.

It depends - surprise! - what the bird has been eating, but most of the time I find I can get it off the car by saturating it with water from the hose-fed brush, then leaving it while I wash the rest of thecar, and then saturating it again.

It won't alwsys work, but it's worth a try before risking anything more abrasive.

The majority of car manuals' car care sections specifically point out the damage that can quickly be caused by bird droppings.

As others have rightly pointed out, get them washed off as quickly as possible as they can prove quite corrosive...:-)

Once parked the MINI at IKEA under a light gantry thing, didn't notice the hundreds of starlings perched above...returned to a polka dot car. Drove it immediately to a jet wash and cleaned it, but still took a bit of work when I got home to sort out the worst.

Moral : look up when parking!

Does anyone on here understand what's going on - with the vast majority of cars now being pearlescent/metallic then surely the bird stuff should be stopped by the lacquer coat? Yet my daughters 54 reg sparkly black Seat Ibiza already has several splodges that seem immoveable.

The bird pooh is actually attacking the lacquer, not the paint. There's nothing you can do short of re-lacquering the bonnet.
Regular polishing of the bonnet and roof will act as a barrier but it's too late in this case by the sound of it.

Seagulls are the worst, and unavoidable if you work by the sea. Each day when leave for home the car is completly splattered. It doesn't seem to permanently affect 1993 era white paint though.
If modern paint isn't resistant to this well known and obvious risk surely it calls into question the suitability of the paint used?
Doesn't a product have to be fit for the purpose?

This is the price we pay for "environmentally friendly" water based paints.

I had another go at this (my daughter's 54 reg metallic black Seat Ibiza).
It had a large splodge on the bonnet.
T-Cut didn't seem to touch it, but (as grnicol mentions higher up in the thread) Autoglym's Paint Renovator took it off almost 100% (probably would have done 100% but I didn't want to rub through the paint!). It is a bit scary to use, as it feels *much* more abrasive than T-Cut. Anyway, polished up, it look fine again.

I seem to remember some years ago, that a large number of Peugeot owners took a class-action against Peugeot for the ease at which their paintwork was damaged by bird poo.

I'm sorry though I can't remember what the outcome was.

Strangely enough (as I don't often wash my car) yesterday and today (on and off) spent several hrs cleaing and polishing my car. Used Meguirs Clay and Nxt polish for the 1st time. They was a mark that I thought was a scratch on one of the doors, where it looked like the lacquer had been damaged. Used the clay then the polish and completely gone.... or am I just justifying the £26 they cost me ?

>.... or am I just justifying the £26 they cost me ?

Nope,

the finishing clay is very good at getting rid of paint/polish contaminents. To see how well it works, wash a small section of paintwork as thoroughly as you can then immediately go over in with finishing clay. You'll be amazed at how much dirt it picks up and how much smoother the paint feels.

On my cars, the biggest offender is pollen that somehow manages to attach itself permanently to the polish/paintwork.

JUSTIFIED......

Well the £26 was worth it.

I washed the car on Tuesday, I've since done around 180 miles drivng in it, went to fill with petrol today, as usual pull up took of the petrol cap, place it on the roof which has a slight slope and the cap slide straight off, this never happened before when I used another kind of polish, shall be sticking with is now.

yes if you continue to wash with meguiars nxt shampoo and then wax with nxt polish now and again you will find that the bird droppings will simply wipe off with a damp tissue or kitchen roll.
I always had problems but since using this product --no problems .
It is critical to remove the droppings asap from the effected area.

A tip my son gave me is effective if you can't get to your stock of cleaners, polishes, etc. Cover the splodge of bird poo with a sheet of newspaper, pour water onto newspaper until it is saturated, leave for 15 minutes then wipe up with the wet paper. Bingo - bird poo completely gone.
