A3 closed southbound at Burpham

A3 closed southbound at Burpham - Thommo
Very bad accident A3 southbound just before the Burpham turn. Police fire brigade and ambulances all in attendance. Looks like people dead. Road closed as at 15:00. Tailbacks beyond M25.

AGAIN?

That makes 4 closures and fatal accidents on that stretch this year.

I know it well, as I live nearby, nothings changed, so whats going on?

I use the road fairly often - can't explain why it's suddenly started but there's usually some last minute lane changing. And that bit of road is fairly fast as you come up to it but is on a long swinging bend. Deterioration in road surface?

It was the open straight 3 lane stretch about 1/2 mile before the Burpham turn off. Way before the bend and the Guildford off ramp lane starts.

No obvious reason for it unless someone moving fast decided then was the time to move over to turn off at Burpham and moved in to someone in the inner lanes.

Update.

Accident was 400 yards before the Burpham turn off.

Thick black tyre marks in a reverse S pattern from the inside to outside lanes of this 3 lane section.

Looks like for some reason a vehicle snaked under very heavy braking from the inside to the outside lane where the collision ocurred.
