Long Life Oil
>>
my personal views - i look at it this way. say this oil costs me £60 for 5litres.
it is long life oil, so should last a minimum of 12,000 miles and max of 20,000 miles.
but if i take the pessimistic view, and assume 12000 miles, the £60 cost per 12,000 miles is the same as half-penny per mile.
whereas my petrol costs me about 15p a mile, and for 12,000 miles that comes out at £1800.
so lube-oil is a minor cost overall. to me it is not worth chasing a few pounds saving in driving around looking for the best deal. but those few pounds might matter to someone in a different situation than me.

I have just paid £20 + £8 postage for 5 litres of Fuchs Long Life Oil VW 506.00 spec. Halfords wanted £13 per lire for Castrol !!!
If it is for a VW tdi pd engine it could be a costly mistake using 506.00 spec., it should be 506.01 .

the halfords oil is £40 for 4 litres,,,,and you know what you are getting....
from ebay...are you sure you know what it is?????

Before you use 505.00 or 506.00 spec. oil in a VW TDI PD engine go to the following site and read thoroughly, especially the paragraph "WHAT IS LONG LIFE OIL."
You must use VW spec 505.01 or 506.01 in VW tdi pd engines otherwise you could finish up with a very expensive repair job

Thanks for you concern, I am sure that I have bought the correct oil. The car is a 2003 Skoda Octavia 110bhp (non PD) TDI, and handbook states that only a 506.00 or 506.01 oil must be used. The oil, which I bought, has the following spec: -
FUCHS TITAN SUPERSYN SL LL PLUS 0W-30
Fully synthetic super high performance fuel economy engine oil for the latest VW and AUDI engines with extended drain periods API SJ/CF, ACEA A5,A1,B5,B1 VW 503.00, 506.00, 506.01
This all started when I had my first variable service at 26,000 miles. Knowing how expensive long life oil is from when I bought 1 litre from Halfords to top up (£13 !!!), I was somewhat surprised to be charged only £12 for 4.5 litres of oil.
I questioned this with the service manager of the main dealer, who just shrugged his shoulders, not exactly filling me with confidence.
I am aware that dealers by oil in bulk, and therefore put it to the back of my mind thinking that a main dealer should know what oil to use, and drove 3000 ? 4000 miles.
However it has recently started to niggle me, dealers are not one to pass up the opportunity to make extra profit, and as the dealer was only small perhaps they don?t see many cars on variable servicing, and have simply used a normal petrol / diesel oil instead. I am sure that if the engine suffered a failure, I would have a hell of a job proving it was because the wrong oil has been used.
For piece of mind, I therefore decided to have the oil changed (at a local garage, as the main dealer is miles away) to one, which I know to have the proper spec. After looking at Halfords etc and falling over that the vast prices for long life oil, I hit on the idea of using eBay instead hence my purchase. The user rep500 seems to be selling a lot of automotive kit including oils, but not long life oil when I checked today.
In the future, I wonder if it is worth supplying my own oil when the car is serviced, at least I will know that the right one has been used.
I wonder how many VW/Audi/Skoda/SEAT cars are serviced using the wrong oil, particularly those fitted with PD engines? I have read somewhere on the Internet that VAG are working with oil suppliers to produce one oil that can be used for all vehicles to resolve any confusion.

After quite some research I thought I knew which oil to use but after reading this thread I'm more confused than ever. I have a 2003 Golf estate 1.9SDI that's the non turbo diesel. The vehicle is 2 years old in November and has not been serviced yet but has only done 5K miles. Its only used for mainly short journeys and I was going to change the oil myself before it's first service because I'm planning a long trip in July. According to the handbook 506.00 or 506.01 oil is suitable. Any thoughts?

If you are going to leave the next batch of oil in for two years I would say go for the 506.01 as that oil is what VW use for their variable service schedule which leaves the oil in for longer than "usual".
Personally I would buy the cheaper of the two and change it more often. Two year old oil that has only done 5,000 miles must be full of all sorts of moisture.

I always suggest the VERY best place for oil, is your local independent garage/mechanic.
As long as he belongs to Vauxhall 'Trade Club'(its free to join), he can buy genuine parts at well below list price.
This ESPECIALLY applies to lubricants, as they constantly offer as a loss leader, buy 3, get 1 free deals, of 5ltr containers.
The prices went up for the first time in years, a month or so back, but still are real value for money.
5W30 Longlife Synthetic £39.40 + VAT 4x5lt
10W40 Semi Synthetic £21.00 + '' ''
& sources suggest made by Comma/Esso
Worth thinking on.
