97 or 95? - Orson {P}
Quick dullard question!

I get an average of 18mpg out of the Jag using 95 octane petrol from Shell usually. Will running it on Super give me better mpg? I'm after the most cost-effective solution, so is it worth the extra 6ish pence a litre (bearing in mind it swallows about 75 litres a time...)

I'm aware of the issues about supermarket vs brand petrol, but I'm after what works out cheapest via any route.

Ta!

With your Jag i would recommend Shell Optimax as it is 98ron & maybe better suited for your motor!

Only one way to find out...
Some people get better economy with super, some people don't. I would say that most people I know who have had an improvement have found that it just cancelled out the extra purchase cost, rather than saving them money overall.

I've found that my Corsa goes much farther on Optimax so definitely cancels out the extra cost of it. But the psychology of it is that I still shudder when I see 92.9p on the nozzle of the pump even though I know full well that its really no more expensive.

I've offended the swear filter even though I didn't mean to.

{Sorted. But for future reference, it *might* be better to say further, instead of farther ;o) . DD}

My old Vectra V6 was cheaper to run on Optimax.

I'm intrigued, DD. Just who might object to that mis-spelling of 'further'?

No one - hopefully. But the first four letters of farther end up triggering the swearfilter, whereas the first four letters of further doesn't.

The Barchetta goes better and is more economical on the Shell 100oct stuff. Whether it cancels out the increased purchase price I don´t know, we don´t do enough KMs for it really to matter.
What would make a difference for you Orson would be an LPG conversion... just an idea.

LPG might make sense, if it were possible on a V12. Regrettably, however, you have to treat the engine as 2xV6, and it ends up costing about £5000. I have looked into it with a firm who specialise in LPG conversions for Jags and other big thirsty vehicles, and their advice was very much....don't.

Ahh, I'll have to tell my SO to call the XJ an old-furts car then.

Peter,

You can try Optimax but I doubt that you'll see any difference unless you adjust the timing. I think that the XJS didn't get electronic timing until '89 when they went to the Marelli unit.

Kevin...

PS. 18mpg sounds pretty good for the V12, my 3.2 XJ8 averages around 22mpg on the daily commute.
