I used to have a Rover 416 petrol. I absolutely loved the car - very comfortable, nice interior. I would recommend the SLi model - plusher inside, with nice wood trim (OK, never sure if this was wood-effect, but looked nice anyway). A nicer interior than my current Primera.

I would recommend the 4 door - looks better than the hatch IMO, and also about 6 inches longer.

Two cars later, I would still say the Rover has been the nicest car I have owned.

The only reason I got rid of it was due to head gasket failure on the K-series engine. Not sure if that would be relevant on a diesel, but, if it is, check very carefully. I did look into getting mine repaired but I was quoted £400 to £700, and with no guarantee that the problem would not reappear, so I got rid, bought an Octavia estate and regretted it (I know how great Octavias are supposed to be, but I was not impressed). The Skoda's interior was very austere compared to the Rover's.

I wouldn't go near Rover dealers - but you probably wouldn't be in this price range. Whenever I took my car for a service, it always felt that they were doing me a big favour by even bothering to talk to me!

My car looked great in dark metallic red, the lovely standard alloys (some of the nicest alloys I've seen) plus the great spoiler. So what if everyone thinks these cars are driven by old people - who cares what everyone else thinks!

If I were you, I would get another cheap van.

Also I would have the children adopted, then you will enjoy fishing much better.

I've not long got rid of a 420 diesel - well worth it for £1500. Mine was an R and went for £1200, so you ought to find a respectable one. Parts aren't generally a big problem, and it's as good as anything else and better than quite a few others. I also used mine for going shooting, and no problem with getting the kit in or bowling down muddy tracks etc.

I run a Rover 420SLDi diesel. 100 miles/day with ~50mpg. P reg & 83K. As you say nice interior. Starts and runs, what more do you want. I would say for ~£1400.00 they are good cars.

Ran a 420 SLDI saloon for a year.
Good performance and 50 mpg.
Go for a five door. Looks a bit frumpy, but the saloon was no good for fishing tackle - boot only just deep enough for a Shakespeare box and rear seats do not fold flat enough to take a big rod holdall.
