Fiesta loose rattleing noise - Ford Dagenham
Hello.

The Wife has just sat me down and made me a cup of tea prodding this new Fiesta brochure help.

Down to the point.

Upon acceleration when cold a noise can be heard (from under the bonnet) that sounds like a loose chain on a bicycle more like a flapping sound. it clears up when warm i have been told.

All ideas or suggestions most welcome.

You've got me trying to think back now to my Fiesta ownership, I'm convinced that I've heard this before but for the life of me I can't remember what it was!

I take it this is a new noise? How old is the car again?

Doubt I'll remember now, it's too long ago, but you never know...

Not sure if its exactly the same, but when we got our brand new fiesta in 99 there was a noise after a few seconds, like a spring recoiling, when the engine was started and drove off. Took us a while to be able to make it happen every time. Only when the engine is started and you drive off.... not if you stopped with engine still running and drove off.

Took car back to the garage. They were puzzled for a while and eventually found out that its normal. The car has ABS and its something to do with that. Happens every time.

You dont have ABS by any chance ?

Hello Joe.

I dont think it has abs.

I remember that i once had to stop suddently so i did not kill a rabbit and the car skidded so i dont think it has abs.

It sounds like a chain flapping about but i dont think it has any of those too as it has a rubber belt for the cams.

Iam not sure where it is comeing from. (though i can pinpoint it to the bonnet area.)

You mentioned the noise is only there when cold. On Vauxhalls the EGR valve can make a noise when the engine is cold. It's there to aid the engine in getting warmer that bit quicker. I'm wondering if the same applies to your Ford?

Not sure this helps at all, but on my HCS engine, I always get a feint flapping sound when coldn (above all the other clattering and ticking!), particularly prevalent on cold mornings. I've always put it down to engine wear.

Piston slap?
Fiesta loose rattleing noise - Ford Dagenham

How do i cure piston slap.

The car has done 39800 do these engines need a decoke.

Thankyou for the replies.

EGRs can get coked up and benefit from cleaning or replacement. It allows some exhaust gas to go back into the engine, hence exhaust gas recirculation, part of emission control.
Piston slap is caused by the piston skirt hitting the bores, more noticable when cold. You could try different oil, slightly thinner grade/better quality.Decoking is a thing of the past, generally,(and thankfully)with modern fuel and oil.

Hello.

Where is the Egr located in this car.

Can a bottle of fuel additive remove carbon from the inside of the combustion chambers.
