Galvanised body panels - prm
Just out of interest, when cars have body repairs are the new or repaired panels galvanised like they are when new?

Generally no,a thin coat of primer to prevent rust in storage is how they usually come.If a panel was galvanised the galvy would have to be removed from the area to be welded and the weld cannot be galvanised after.

Are cars galvanised? my understanding is that this is done by dunking in molten zinc - not a very paintable surface.
I thought they were treated with phosphoric something or other that made them rustproof. I bought a sheet panel from a bodyshop supplies place and it seems to be coated as it never rusts even though it is in a damp shed.

I just remember reading somewhere that the astras had about a 10 year anti-corrosion warranty cause the panels were galvanised, not sure how or where though

My C5 had to have a new front wing a couple of years ago when it was just months old after someone bumped it in a car park and made off. I made a point of asking what sort of wing they were going to fit and they assured me in was a genuine Citroen part (galvanised) Of course that was a bolt on panel so there was no welding involved. In fact I was quite surprised (shocked even!) when they said they would order up the wing, spray it, then tell me to come in for a day to have it fitted, Granted, the car is black, but I couldn't believe my ears that they would paint a part without the car being there.

Oddly enough, it was - and still is - absolutely perfect!

My dad had just the same experience with his Rover Tourer: The wing was bolt on and has lasted as good as the original the last 6/7 years. Same can't be said about the bolts they used, though!.

i work at a body shop..to the best of my knowlege, a new genuine panel will gavanised as good as new.if its bolt on then your all good

a weld on panel will have its protection ground off and just primer and paint over the steel..not so great as its the seams that usually rust

repaired panels will have the paint ground off and most of the protection unless its a very minor dent

have a look on older volvo's and saabs and such like...you can usually see that the only rust is a result of body repair

C5 Owner-perhaps with the car being not too old they assumed that it wouldnt have bleached any and simply matched the paint to factory spec? Not sure, just guessing.
