i have put down a deposit for it and also gonna get the rac to inspect it on tuesday
i am paying 10k for it,
what does everyone think?

Well it's the best interior colour for Volvos. It's done 20,000miles pa for three years and will now be starting to get a little baggy.

Is LPG important? There are many more D5s around which are fantastic to drive, so prices may be even better?

Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?
Thinking of getting this car - pj4d
not essential but a nice thing to have :)
i like having an auto box,
d5's seem to be around the same figure though

The space needed for the tank seems to be one of the few downsides of LPG.

Since that car is factory-equipped for LPG, have they have managed to find a way of fitting the LPG tank that doesn't use up the spare wheel space or take up a big chunk of the boot?
Thinking of getting this car - pj4d
its where the spare wheel should be so if you get a puncture your screwed, but i think i shd be ok, i will sign upto RAC :)

Not trying to put you of, pj4d, but I thought I read something in the backroom about the breakdown services refusing to help with punctures if there was no spare wheel. (Though I may be wrong)

If so, owners of the new no-spare-wheel BMWs are in trouble too, but does anyone know what attitude the breakdown services catually take? It seems to me that no spare makes a puncture or tyre failure a much more expensive exercise for them, because the car has to be towed or carried away rather than having the wheel changed on the spot.
Thinking of getting this car - pj4d
well surely thats why you take the breakdown cover so if your car is damaged and cannot be repaired it gets towed?
if a spark plug messed up they cant say look matey you should be carrying spares in the boot otherwise we cant help.
Thinking of getting this car - DSLRed
the difference is though that it is reasonsble to carry a spare tyre, but not spare spark plugs.

I'm sure I read in my RAC cover details that if you call them out to a puncture and your spare is out of action then they will not pay to have it towed because it is your fault that you have not got the spare fixed.

Whether that applies to not also having room for a spare - I do not know for certain.
Thinking of getting this car - pj4d
yeah i suppose, you can get some sorts of puncture repair kits that could help for a while
althogh i should check it out proper ;)

I've just checked my RAC terms of membership and under the 'General Exclusions' section is the following statement.

RAC membership does not cover :-

12. Any costs incurred as a result of you failing to carry a servicable spare tyre and wheel, or incurred in arrangeing the removal of a wheel secured by locking wheel nuts if you are unable to provide a serviceable key, appropriate to your vehicle, caravan or trailer.

Please note: Motorised vehicles that are manufactured without the provision of a spare wheel will be considered on their individual merits.

Assistance in changing a wheel is covered, subject to you carrying a serviceable spare as specified above.

Hope this helps.

i will call around and see what aa and green flag sat
so any more opinions on the car itself?
Thinking of getting this car - pj4d
anyone else offering any advice?

I would check out the insurance situation as you might find the premium higher than a standard petrol engine.

Also IIRC you might not be able to use the Channel Tunnel with a LPG car.

In 2001 I bought a 2000 W plate Vectra that was LPG from a VX main dealer. It was the 2L five door hatch in 'CD' spec. I liked the car, it ran very well and bought it only because the LPG conversion was done by VX themselves, not a third party.

I liked the car, it ran very well in petrol and the seemless changeover to run on LPG was great. The car ran well on either fuel and switching was never a problem...in so much as that flick the switch and three clicks in three seconds and the change over was complete. No power loss no issues.

The only 'downside' that I experinced was in those days petrol was about 77p while LPG was 35p. I could get 180 miles in LPG tank of 30L (my LPG tank was also where the spare wheel would be in the boot). So LPG delivered half the mileage at half the cost of petrol. So long as LPG is < half price of petrol, you will win by saving fuel costs...and thesedays with unleaded @ 85p and LPG 40p you will make the saving.

I also found that within two years, I was experienceing a lot of running problems with the cars engine and ECU in so much as that I had to have had replaced my fuel injectors (twice due to clogging), the ECU swapped out (twice), cauto choke replacing thermostat and radiator...all of which made me suspicious as to how LPG affects the running of a cars engine - can swapping fuels be good for the car?

Maybe I had a bad car, I don't know. But all the people that I have known who have owned straight 2L Vectras find them reliable. To my mind, the problems I had experienced, were possibly down to the 'dual fuel' running of the car.

I understand that LPG is a cleaner fuel and has a cleaner burn in the engine etc. but I'm not convinced. I would strongly urge you to check on teh Volvo Forums and phone round a couple of dealers to see what they think about servicing and maintaing such cars before you take the plunge. Eithe way, I wish you happy motoring :)

I ran a battered old Daewoo Nubira on LPG for a year and was absolutely sold on the benefits. It subsequently blew up, but that had (apparently) nothing to do with the Italian LPG conversion and everything to do with the mad Italian who had it before me.
However check the UK LPG forums for a supplier near you, as it´ll be pretty pointless getting it if there isn´t an LPG garage in your neighborhood.

Also, I don't think you're allowed on cross-sea ferries, or was it the channel tunnel? Anyway, I kept reading that when looking at crossings on various sites last summer. The price of larger Volvos plummets from new, expect it to lose 50% of value every year.

- Nice car! But for the age and mileage, plus it's dubiously-valuable LPG conversion, I reckon you're paying a bit too much for it? Try UK9500 tops Presumably you're not buying it from a main dealer?
Thinking of getting this car - pj4d
no its channel tunnel - which is expensive and i doubt i would go on there any way
hmm so you are saying that this time next year it will be worth 5k
and the year after that 2.5?
Thinking of getting this car - GreatestDancer
Well I think that this is a good price even if it wasn't LPG - 60k miles isn't much assuming a full Volvo service history and these S60s are gorgeous looking.

Add to that the great leather interior and a nice autobox and I think you've done well - especially to negotiate a £1000 amount off of the asking...

Thinking of getting this car - pj4d
they had a price of 11995 so they purposely put it really high so people think they are getting a bargain
it has volvo fsh and its been confirmed with volvo themselves
the fact of driving a car without warraanty freaks me out :(

it the channel tunnel?

Its the Chunnel (Channel Tunnel) my friend.

On the subject of no-spare three years ago the AA refused to use the aerosol provided with my wife's peugeot 206. Later admitted that he could have done but they had a communication problem - checked with RAC and they will so after 22 years in the AA guess where her business is now!

I don't know what they do if the tyre is damaged beyond the aerosol - probably just call out the KwikFit mobile man for you but check with them before assuming you get recovery. All our cars have a space saver or better now.
