Hi all, if any of you have seen my recent thread in Technical Matters, you'll know why I'm asking this! :-)
Could someone please let me know what the current Glass's or Cap value is on a 1996 BMW 316i SE with A/C ilo Sunroof?
Also, does anyone have any guestimate as to how much an engine for one of these would normally go for from the breakers?
Basically we've been informed that it's not likely to be economical to repair our current enigne, we know the car also needs 4 new tyres and an exhaust so we're very tempted to get shot of it altogether.
We need to know how much we're likely to get for it as a trade in (assuming it's all sorted) as this is the only way that we are gonna get rid of it ourselves. If it's only worth around £2K (as I suspect) then I doubt if it's gonna be worth our while to repair it at all and we might just offer it to our garage for £1000 or whatever we can get for it in it's current state.
That might sound like a lot for a non-runner, but the car is sub 50K miles and in excellent condition, I reckon it might be worth that to someone who can drop a new engine in, but then I've never dealt with non-runners and their valuations before!
Any advice and especially a quote from the relevant page of Glass's or Cap would be greatly appreciated!

What size engine?
Manual or auto?

If you are thinking of getting rid of it, it could be well worth your while placing a thread on one of the best BMW forums - www.bmwland.co.uk

You can also get the same service through the Vauxhall website - perhaps they pick up the tab for the valuations although they would almost certainly pay pence for them rather than pounds.

Yes, as Blue_Haddock says you can get it through Vauxhall web site. Another source is the Telegraph Motoring web site.

Thanks for the replies people, as I thought the answer seems to be around £2K trade.
It is a manual, and I gave a clue to the engine size in the title. ;-)

I gave a clue to the engine size
>>
but it would take a beemer enthusiast to know the engine size for the year. some 316 had 1800cc engines, others may have had 2 litre engines. i just would not know how big a beemer's engine is from the model name.

Quite. When I did a glass's check last night it asked what the engine size 1.6 or 1.8? hence my asking here.

Had a good look at the link above this evening.
Very easy to use, very informative and from a commercial point of view complete madness.
