I note that tonight's new series will feature:
Range Rover Sport versus a tank;
Game of five-a-side football with the Toyota Aygo.
Damn. I just checked my diary, and see that tonight I'm down for hoovering my car mats.

TG is now 'entertainment' and not for the person who has a interest in cars. That we get from Magazines, web-sites and actually getting our hands dirty.

It would be really interesting if they took that Suzuki thing and drove it around the course on different tyres to show how 'good' tyres are better than cheap ones.
--
Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?
Top Gear - new series - PhilW
And entertaining it was - I enjoyed it. That makes 2 entertaining programmes on TV this weekend (Have I got news was the other)

"really interesting if they took that Suzuki thing and drove it around the course on different tyres to show how 'good' tyres are better than cheap ones."
Sorry Espada, don't agree - I can read about that
Top Gear - new series - blue_haddock
i can foresee us having a game of footy on the carpark when we get a couple of aygo's in!
Top Gear - new series - school boy
Did you see the bits flying off them? I bet Toyota are impressed........
Top Gear - new series - blue_haddock
They were heavily stickered up and looking at the condition of them at the start i think they were probably some kind of test vehicles that had already servred their purpose and so they didn't mind them getting trashed even further
Top Gear - new series - cheddar
Good fun though "Star in a reasonably priced car" is getting a bit tedious.
Top Gear - new series - El Hacko
Raising the game: amazing - TG has done it again, given a car maker (yes, Toyota - again) the sort of publicity you couldn't buy ... remember the truck they couldn't destroy despite blowing it up and drowning it?

I'm not complaining if it means i sell a few more cars!

I can understand that, BH. To be fair, Toyota has established a reputation for reliability and now they're starting to get the styling right (not completely to Western tastes, mind!), so they deserve the fame.
BTW, wonder if the Citroen will be as reliable as the Toyota version?

They all come from the same factory.

Had a look at a Peugeot 107 version a few weeks ago. Very well put together, nice styling, loads of front and rear space for it's size and will start at £7K on the road.

So if you want one, be focussed and don't let those sales prevention officers put you off at the ToyPugCit dealers.

"I'm not complaining if it means i sell a few more cars!"
Although the "little one" said go for the C1 'cos it's cheaper.
Start of discussion with regard to perceived reliability of Toyota version compared to the C1 and comparitive depreciation???
Top Gear - new series - blue_haddock
My thought has always been will the pug/citreon versions be built to toyota standards or will the toyota be built to french standards.

I missed it tonight. Is it repeated later in the week?

Assuming there is a difference! Perhaps you mean will the Toyota have character, charm and Gallic flair!

Must say I liked the point made about the Aygo that it had been designed to be built/sell cheap and not like so many other cars at the small/cheap end designed and then corners cut to get it as cheap as possible.

Also liked the chaining to the bus bit, maybe a silly way to make the point but at least they made it and obviously the bus company didn't like it being made by trying to hide them from view behind another bus.

Top Gear - new series - Clanger
Great, irreverent fun. Loved the 5-a-side footy. Loved the tank vs. Range Rover Sport. Did you see the black smoke from the tank when the Army driver floored it? Even found the chained-to-a-bus thing amusing. Keep it up TG.

i dont think anybody has mentioned it yet but i liked the look of the honda at the start. a good general purpose vehicle that is cheap but not all rounded at the corners like the childmobiles

Yup Fabulous episode. I assume the Aygo 5-a-side was cooked up with Toyota marketing department, as it seems to fit the "funky fun" image they are portraying.

but most of all...

# Oh Lord wont you buy me that mercedes benz#
Top Gear - new series - y2k+4
For me, Top Gear is great fun. I know detractors and "true" die-hards prefer the more clinical nature of Fifth Gear, but the fun had on Top Gear reminds me that that is what cars are about.

At times they annoy me, but you know what? I think that's part of the charm...

Is it an entertainment show, or a documentary? Who cares, there are titchy Toyotas playing football! Can't wait for when Clarkson's mother helps him review a car...
Top Gear - new series - teabelly
Stupendous. Loved the bit with the toyota thingies playing footy. Only time I have ever enjoyed a football match. My favourite bit was when James May smacked himself in the face with the fold down seat in that Honda Element ;-)

Top Gear - new series - Armitage Shanks {p}
The Cool Wall is getting a bit repetitive; differences of opinion, which are quite normal, and pictures being put where Hammond can't get at them. Yawn! They do find it tricky to fill an hour and conkers with caravans smacks of desparation but overall it is shown as entertainment rather than a factual programme about cars and their merits
Top Gear - new series - Adam {P}
I was sceptical at first but to be honest, I found myself laughing a couple of times.

The Toyota Footie - hilarious. I pictured b_h smirking and thinking of all his extra business!

The tank chase - silly but funny nevertheless.

All in all, I quite enjoyed it. As someone said earlier, if you want serious, you buy a magazine or watch 5th Gear. For a bit of a laugh on a Sunday, Top Gear did the job I think.

As i type this i've had no enquiries for it yet but i've only been here 5 minutes. I reckon by the end of the day i'll be sick of the little things!
Top Gear - new series - daveyjp
I really enjoyed the show, they even featured a 'green' car to pander to the environmentalists! If Range Rover ever wanted a tough demonstration of the capabilities of the Sport model I think that was it. As for the Honda we saw loads of them in the States last year - bit too much cube like for me. The new Merc car looks fantastic but as Clarkson said it's big drawback is it's a Merc so expect dodgy build (although Merc reckon this is now being sorted) and appalling customer service (Merc don't comment on this aspect!). I'm looking forward to more of the same.
Top Gear - new series - alex

I wonder what will happen to those battered Aygos ? Will they be patched up and sold as "nearly new" ?

Did you notice in the film at beginning which showed highlights of forthcoming programs. Clarkson was in a supercar saying 'i must beat those guys' so it's obviously a train/plane v a car (again)

ho-hum.
Top Gear - new series - Ross_D
Anybody notice that the Merc that the stig drove was different to the one Jeremy drove immediatly before? I wonder why that is.... Could it be the first one broke?!?!
Top Gear - new series - AR-CoolC
They'll be filmed on completly different days.
Top Gear - new series - volvoman
Quite liked the Honda & MB reviews but wonder why they insist on silly camera trickery and grainy 'mauve' filters. Why can't we just have clear, steady camera shots? The Range Rover review would've been just fine without the tank.

Cool wall, star in cheap car etc. etc. etc. utter garbage.

NIce of the BBC to warn you, I assume you will not be watching then so no problem.

Included in the trailer stuff was a shot of Sabine(?) the Queen of Nurburgring in a Ford Transit. My recollection is that, in the last series, Clarkson got a Jaguar round under 10 minutes after 2+ days of trying and Sabine got round in about 9 min 51 in a car she had never driven before. When Clarkson said he was pleased with his sub 10 minutes she said she could go under 10 minutes a Transit. Could be very interesting indeed!
Top Gear - new series - Imagos
Ah Sabine!.. dream woman, much better than VBH me thinks,

Yes RF when that particular clip of car versus plane/train/ comes on i'll make a cup of tea.

The moment i saw the vehicles i thought that the panels looked a bit rippled underneath the stickers - i would imagine they would have been test vehicles that had served their purpose and so toyota didn't mind a few more dents and scratches
Top Gear - new series - daveyjp
The Toyotas would have been pre-production models destined to be destroyed so why not make the destruction process more fun?

Aygo football- pointless and boring, what was their point, that you can only play 'football' with Aygos? They could have done exactly the same thing with 10 year old Fiestas.

Star in a car- never liked this bit, if i tape TG, always fastforward this part.

Like the rest of the show though, but they obviously struggle to fill an hour by including the pointless stuff mentioned above. Looking at the IMDB forums, TG is very popular in USA, Europe et al.
Top Gear - new series - chris_w
It would be quite interesting to see the age ranges that do and don't like Top Gear.

Personally, I think it's great... I can watch 5th Gear for a more straight forward car program, and read web sites and magazines for the real under the bonnet nuts and bolts information.

It's a damned site more entertaining than hearing Quentin Wilson talking about how I could pick up a 26 year old 7 series for £1.89 that will do another 400,000 miles, in that stupid way of talking that he has.

Cars being used to play football is pure genius - don't care what car it is, it just so happened to be a Toyota. Every time star in a car comes on, I'm thinking, 'wonder how fast I could get round there'. Some of my favourite pieces of TG are the 'stupid' features - like the time they had to be those clapped out Porsches.

I think if you take the show at face value and look at the target audience, they are achieving exactly what they set out to do. I know my Sunday nights are brighter because of it.
Top Gear - new series - PoloGirl

That car football looked fantastic - I want to play! I especially chortled to think of all the effort the Toyota PR people will have put in to getting that sorted out, only to have TopGear tell people to buy the cheaper Citroen instead. (Have to say though, I am a badge snob and would still buy the Toyota over the other two if I wanted a teeny car). For all those people who say Top Gear don't do real affordable cars - how much more real and affordable can you get than the group 1 insurance Aygo?

The tank thing was brilliant. I have no desire to drive a range rover, or go off road, but this was pure entertainment.

Agreed though, the cool wall and the star in the reasonably priced car are looking a bit tired. The same can't be said for Mr Hammond though! tinyurl.com/bzeuv

;)
Top Gear - new series - Pugugly {P}
Having watched this in the right frame of mind, I have to admit that I enjoyed it. Being a landie fan the tank thing pleased me, I can see myself in that merc. Agree with some postings that they need to move away from some features like the celeb bit....

Check out JC's shirt, a definate Hammpnd cast-off.

Had some reservations about the content so taped it so I could skip forward, finished up watching it right through, very enjoyable.

The Locomotive Act of 1865(amended 1878)and repealed in 1896 restricted the speed of horse-less vehicles to 4mph in open country and 2 mph in towns. The act required three drivers for each vehicle - 2 to travel in the vehicle and one to walk ahead carrying a red flag... - the Red Flag Act.

What I'm wondering is this. When the act was repealed, it meant that motor vehicles could travel at more than 4mph on the highway and no longer needed someone to walk infront with a red flag. But has it ever actually become illegal to voluntarily drive at 4mph with an assistant in front carrying a red flag?

Perhaps The Stig can put this to the test on the North Circular in a Hummer, with Clarkson carrying the red flag.

If you see it on TV, you saw it here first!!!!

Cheers, Sofa Spud

Top Gear - new series - trancer
Driving at 4mph may not be illegal, but I am sure they have some other all-purpose ruling to get you with. Impeding traffic flow, or driving with lack of due care (care for the other motorists you are obstructing, that is).
Top Gear - new series - frostbite
Yes, only a vague memory here but, didn't they clobber someone for deliberately and persistently driving at circa 30mph on the A12 fairly recently?
Top Gear - new series - Imagos
on BBC2 now (7pm) if you missed it on Sunday.
Top Gear - new series - David Horn
Was it me, or did Clarkson really hurtle past that horse while he was testing the Sport? Very impressed with it's off-roading ability, though not sure Land Rover will be as happy when they get it back!!
Top Gear - new series - SjB {P}
Great telly.

Coming up in this series:

Amphibious vehicles such as racing hovercraft (I've been to such a race, at Claydon House, and it was a fantastic day out)
Limo jumping
Breaking the car high speed roll record, with Hammond inside
Rocket luge
Drag bike school
Marathon runner vs car round London Marathon course
Top Gear Mothers (the presenter's) each present a car
JC racing a Merc SLK 55AMG thorugh the Army's sniper town mockup

Yebbut.... I thought it was supposed to be a motoring programme! What next: a TV chef show where they see which industrial gas-jet cooker can melt a wok the quickest?

Cheers, Sofa Spud
