Seat Belts in the USA (again) - THe Growler
Watching the NBA playoffs last night (the Detroit Pistons beat the Indian Pacers 86-67 by the way, who, in the splendidly succinct report of the game in this morning's Taiwan News "couldn't stop a clock"). During the commercial breaks GM had a slot on belts with the slogan "Click It Or Ticket". So maybe things are about to change.....Reminded me of that "Clunk Click Every Trip" thing In Britain years ago.

Growler,

"So maybe things are about to change"

Not sure of the point you are making. Seat belts are compulsory in most of the Land of the Free I believe and have been for some while. Enforcement is very strict in some areas. I see very few people in the front of cars not wearing them.

Wasn't it Jimmy Saville who started the 'Clunck Click' campaign?

Yes it was Jimmy Saville in the early to mid 70's.

The 'click it or ticket' advertising campaign was postered all over billboards in Louisiana and Tennessee last week and the boards also advised that the wearing of seat belts is compulsory.

It appears however to be another of the American 'take it or leave it 'laws.

When we were there I noticed quite a few people chose to ignore it, mainly seemed to be cab drivers. I don't know if they are meant to be exempt.

Illinois is also big on 'click it or ticket'. Schaumburg outside Chicago has a sign: "Seat Belt Use: Primary Enforcement Activity".

The only people who don't click it are most cops, cabbies, and me.
