Why do some drivers keep the interior light on when driving at night?
Are they afraid of the dark?
|
|
Mercedes E class has ambient interior lighting that has five levels of brightness which work when headlights are on. one in the front and one in the rear....
|
|
|
They are possibly;
a) reading a map
b) reading a newspaper
c) looking for their mobile
d) looking for something to eat, drink or smoke
e) looking for something they were eating, drinking or smoking and have dropped
f) looking at the speedo because someone has dimmed the instrument lights and they have no idea how to brighten them
g) someone has switched the interior lights on permanently and they have no idea how to switch them back to door operation
h) reading the drivers manual in an attempt to deal with f) or g)
i) they enjoy glancing at their manly/girly profile in the side window

j) Some clasps are very difficult to find and operate in the dark.

I passed a bit of a chavvy Pug 106 the other week, which was liberally be-decked with neon lights, including strip lights on the interiors of the a, b and c pillars. I can't imagine that they could see the slightest thing outside of their windows.

Trucks often have the cab back lit in red. This reduces eye strain and it works.
Don't knock it until you've tried it!

"Trucks often have the cab back lit in red"

My A6 has two little red lights in the head lining that project a soft glow to illuminate the central console. It's a very nice touch, and I've spent ages trying to rig up something similar in green in my other car, but it either doesn't work at all, or looks like chavvy interior neons.

In chavvy land it could be deemed - see no evil, do no evil.
With the stereo turn up with full bass, probably couldn't hear no evil either.
Then you must remember not to touch their car either, otherwise they will speak, so they can speak no evil.
Or put it another way think of the 4 wise monkeys!!!!

"Why do some drivers keep the interior light on when driving at night?"
So as they can write text messages on their mobiles.
I shouldn't think one could see much of what's going on outside, it makes the windows act like mirrors.
Is it actually an offence? DVD?
|
When I have my interior lights on it's normally for a passenger who needs to see something.
I've got to be honest, I've never seen any signifcant difference in my outside visibility, although I've never done it in the 3 series, and that thing lights up like you're doing a photoshoot inside of it, so maybe it will be different. Also, I've never really done it on a darkened country road before, only in street lit areas, so maybe that also affects how much if a difference it makes.

My mobile has it's own backlight, so I don't have that problem ;o)

I take it afm that you are referring to the internal illumination.
Offence under Road Vehicles Lighting Regs to show light other than red to the rear. But internal illumination is a listed exemption as is the rear index plate light.

I was Dwight, thanks. I'm surprised.
Your eyes adjust to the bright lighting level in the car, so are less able to see what's happening on the darker outside. Also, some internal light is reflected from the screen rather than passing through it. This causes the mirror images which further obscure what might otherwise be visible through the glass.
|
it is illegal to drive at night with the internal lights on
but so is it illegal to use your mobiles
and park on the "wrong" side of the road at night
but who cares?? the police are in the office watching the cctv and counting the fines from the speed cameras

it is illegal to ...park on the "wrong" side of the road at night
I've only ever had one parking ticket in my life, and this is what it was for!
