There is a nice 1996 Nissan Almera for sale at my local paper really for buttons £300, we looked at it and apart from a noisy transmission everything is ok with 80k on the clock.
We have no idea how much will it cost to fit a 2nd hand gear box or how much the part should cost. Just wanted a basic idea befor we set ourself on parts hunting spree. does anyone can help?

Depends what is wrong with it - could be anything from a noisy thrust bearing to mainshaft falling apart.
I would imagine you could get a s/hand box for £300 and then another £100-200 for fitting (you'll probably want to put a new clutch on at the same time).

How come my Corolla repair job (bearings + 5th gear & pinion) came to £1300... wouldn't a s/h box have made more sense ?!

Blimey! Who did that? Sounds well over the top!

Don't know how much it would be for a second hand one, from a salvage yard, but Vege UK can sell you a reconditioned one for £435. I don't know how well put together these units are, but being a reconditioned unit, I would expect them to be as good as new. I quite fancy a one of these for my car, cos my gearbox is noisy too, and at £295, it doesn't seem bad value.

Sounds a very good price. Not dealt with Vege recently but in the past I found them to be top-notch quality.
