Is the Ferrari F1 team self-supporting, thru sponsorship, named watches and clothing etc or do people who buy the roadcars pay £???? per car to help fund the racing operation?

Given the costs of Ferarri's F1 team, they would have to sell far more road cars than they do to support it. They only make about 4,000 cars a year. So even if £5,000 per car went to the F1 team that would only realise £20,000,000 and I think the costs are much more than that.

It is quoted as iro £70 mio though may weel exceed that by some margin, Toyota (who also build car and engine) are quoted as approx 10% more, it is reckoned that if you take both Williams and BMW budgets, like wise McLaren and MB, combined they will also spend more than Ferrari.

It is believed Ferrari make an absolute fortune on merchandising and is the primary revenue stream, not the profit on cars.

Ferrari has a USP (unique selling proposition). It is brand. People buy brand.

As its all buried in Fiats P&L (mostly L) its hard to dig out the facts

Dont forget all the prize and appearance money they get from the FIA. This is quite a substantial amount. Also, the sponsors have to pay an awful lot to Ferrari. I think Marlboro pay in the region of £30m to be title sponsor. I wouldn't think Vodafone will be too far behind this figure.

It is now believed in some quarters that they are only the 3rd or 4th biggest spenders in F1 now. Toyota are rumoured to be number 1, and then comes McLaren and possibly Williams if you take into account all the money spent by Mercedes and BMW on their engines.

In many countries if you asked all but the most enthusiastic follower of F1 who McLaren and Williams are' they wouldn't know. Their cars are simply known as Mercedes and BMW.

Profit and Loss, P&L is an accounting term.

Thanks.

You can probably guess from my (complete) lack of any accounting knowledge, who controls the purse strings in our household! ;-)

Tobacco money is where alot of the money comes from. F1 is the last domain where tobacco is allowed to advertise so they pour huge money into it.

Today's Times has an article about the BAR "problem". They quantify the probable immediate loss from the episode to come to about $18m, as follows:

$7m compensation to sponsors
$6m lost sponsor income
$3m 3rd prize money to be given back (for JB at Imola)
$2m cost of transporting 70+ strong team etc to Barcelona

ISTR someone telling me a while back that £5k of each Ferrari sold goes to F1 but that's probably urban mtyh.

Snooker is concerned over who will step in to sponsor the Embassy tournament next year, now that tobacco companies can't.
