Oh, I don't know. I mean, it's ugly, but it's no Porsche Cayenne, or BMW 1 series, and I'm sure given a few mo's, I could think of a much longer list.*
*Of course this is all subjective, and what one person may find ugly, another might love.**
**But really though. The Impreza - it's not pretty, is it? ;)
**But really though. The Impreza - it's not pretty, is it? ;)
No, it isn't. Aesthetics are not really the point of an Impreza, though, are they?

>> **But really though. The Impreza - it's not pretty, is it? >> ;) No, it isn't. Aesthetics are not really the point of an Impreza, though, are they?
Nope. But they're the point of this thread, hence my mentioning it.

AH! yes, hmmmm makes the Primera look desirable.
If they sell more than 250 of those this year I will eat my car piece-by-piece.
(RF- I actually like the Primera estate).
From the back the primera estate almost (i say almost) look ok.

That ssangyong has definitely been designed by commitee. Maybe even three, one for the front, one for the middle and one emergency commitee for the rear when they realised that it was supposed to be a MPV.
It's no Fiat Doblo though.
Scary part is- that pic is showing it at its best- check out the back
www.km77.com/marcas/ssangyong/2005/rodius/gama/g01...p
I thought I'd be nice and only show the front. Surely someone high up at Ssangyong would have banned Ken Greenley from anything to do with the comapny after his previous effort (the Musso).
Looks as if a few of the body parts came from Mercedes Benz as well as the auto-box - may be they were having a sale.
Yes it's no beauty and it's very "Asian". It certainly wouldn't look out of place cruising down Chongshan Road in Taipei on a Saturday night though with two or three bargirls in the back looking for a good time.
Yer average Rolls Royce is equally ugly, costs a lot more, and will probably be dissolving in a cloud of rust when these cars are still giving sterling service.
Ouch - that hurts. Though for some reason, the design is so confused that it is less painful to look at than the bangled BMW5, which is just about straightforward enough to trick the eye into thiking it is coherent, until a second glance reveals lines so weird that I end up thinking I need glasses.
In my opinion the BMW 5 Series looks like Dame Edna, with those crazy glasses! It's the bits at the side that do it. Stupid looking cars, to me anyway.
I thought the new 5 looked appaling.
Now...however... certain aspects, from certain angles, in my mind its starting to gain presence, a touch of the dramatic, even slightly animal like.
The 7 is still a dog tho.
What a truly horrid device!
With that Merc diesel, it'll probably go quite well though!
WRT Beemers, to me, in order of looks:
1 Series - Huge "Urgh", give me some very tinted shades, and pass the bucket
3 Series - Big "Urgh"
5 Series - Just "Urgh"
7 Series - Neutral or quite smart, depending on angle. Certainly the most successful current BMW Saloon for looks.
6 Series - Quite a nice looker from any angle
The facelifted 7 series isn't too bad
My God! It even makes the old Fiat Multipla look pretty good.
That is genuinely vile!
I would even choose the last model Scorpio over that.
--
Use it up : Wear it out : Make do : Do without
It makes a BMW 5 series look well designed.
So I suppose that makes it very VERY bad:-)
madf
That Sangyong is terrible where as a Multpla has character, the 5 Series has grown on me particularly the estate, don't like the Avensis though the estate is better than the saloon, otherwise the Austin/Morris Princess was pretty awful, also Kia Rio, Yaris Verso thingy mini MPV, though the Corolla Verso looks fine. Another Toyota - 1998 ish Corrolas, Ford Fusion (though it drives well), if you want a small Ford have a Ka or Fiesta, bigger a Focus, why a Fusion? Renault Avantime (spelling?) and the similar one who's name escapes me where as the Clio, Megane and Laguna look fine and have character. Peugeot 307cc from the rear, new C5 from the rear.

The ugliest car I have ever seen was last year over in the US of A. It was a black MPV from Honda. It was tall, the back, the sides and roof panels were totally flat with a very small radius to join the panels. What exactly the name was I cannot remember, but it is definitely not available over here (luckily). Any one know the vehicle I am refering to.

It's called the Honda Element.
Even uglier than this though is the Pontiac Aztek which is a bizarre kind of pseudo SUV which makes it easy to realise why General Motors is going down the pan.
It's called the Honda Element.
As in tinyurl.com/88jpk ?
To my mind, that looks excessively big, but kinda cute, albeit in a Discovery3 and SmartFourFour and Fiat Ecobasic take hallucinogenic drugs together kinda way
The subaru and avalanche arn't that bad.
Finally got to see a Discovery 3 in the metal yesterday - yuk! Why didn't Ford just get them to stick 4WD, hill descent control and all the other gizmos into a Transit?
Seriously though, for slabby ugliness it's just got to be the Rolls Royce Phantom hasn't it? Just as well hardly anybody can afford one.
It looks a bit better with different wheels somehow?
Its ugly but the Pug 407 is worse.
The 5 series and 7 series are absolutely beautiful cars. I'll grant you - didn't think so at first but they look so menacing and clean cut.
I'd have either over pretty much anything you care to throw at me within that price range.

"I thought the new 5 looked appaling."
RF I think out left an "e" out as in appealing !
Drove a Rexion Ssa Yong thingy at the weekend, excellent Merc power plant, less pulling power (I feel) than a TD5 Disco I drove immeadiatly afterwards, inside looked nice but felt a bit plasticky
in reality. Failed to convert handbrake location to LHD - Didn't try off road ability.
What about small saloons??
Polo, Focus, Astra, 306 have all spawned some fairly ugly booted versions in their time...
Polo saloon looked OK, the latest Focus saloon looks great!
I think there's some mistake Andy. You appear to have put the Focus in that list.

I also must admit I'm not a big fan of the new Mitsubishi Colt. Saw a black one yesterday, and just thought it looked terrible from the back, all tail lights and a very odd shape that tapers in too much towards the top. It looked like a slightly bloated Daihatsu Move :-(
Sorry Adski, no offence intended. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, after all.
But the guy who said the Polo saloon looked alright... are you serious??
I'm not too keen on the new Porsche myself, Or the older 406.

Do you really mean Granada, or do you mean the late Scorpio?

I rather like the look of the Rodius...at least it's not bland. I had a Scorpio and liked that too so maybe I'm not too conformist in this area:-)

IMHO there is one thing thats almost as bad as a genuinely ugly car- a genuinely bland car. Step forward the VW Touran, surely one of the blandest cars ever made.

The worst must be an Audi A2..ERRRRRRRR.
I think the Vel Satis has to be a strong contender for the title.
I had never seen one on the road until last week, then I saw four (all different) in one afternoon. Remind me of victorian ladies with that bustle in their voluminous skirts.
I've always thought that the Renaut 8 and 12 were particularly ugly. The 8 had a very odd front overhang that made it unclear which end was the front. The 12 had the most extreme wedge shape that made it look like it was designed for midgets in the front and giants in the back.
rear of the A2 - such a shame bec front's fine

I've just realised what the Bangled Beemers remind me of - Panzer tanks!

Austin A40 Hereford.Black and bulbous.EGG 92. Went our holidays every year driven by my great uncle . The memory of the smell of burning oil and exhaust fumes turns my stomach until this day.

The forthcoming SEAT Leon shows that they've lost the plot in a Banglesque way.
The current Leon is a nice, clean looking car - I've thought that ever since I first saw one. But the new one has that fussy, akward but dramatic styling seen on the Altea. The overall shapes are OK, it's the detailing, like the swooping down crease in the front wing, the clumsy scuplting of the bonnet line etc., that spoil the car.
I can only think the VW are using SEAT to break into the far eastern market! The current (outgoing) Leon styling is so good that (tweaked here and there) it should have been adopted for its Golf Mk5 based replacement.
Cheers, Sofa Spud
I personally don't like the back end of the current Leon, it's a bit like sonia off eastenders - i can't precisely say why but i just don't like it.
>>>I personally don't like the back end of the current Leon, it's a bit like sonia off eastenders - i can't precisely say why but i just don't like it.
Because it reminds you of a Mark 2 Astra????
Cheers, SS

i think it's more to do with the curviness of the rest of the car then the back just being totally flat as if it had been reversed into a brick wall at high speed.

Guess what - I saw one of these on the road!! Saw it from its side.
I didn't like the 1, 5 & 7 series when they came out. The 5 & the 7 have grown on me - and I think they look good, - different, and interesting - and quie substantial.
The 1 series - I don't like at all.
Also - although it is not ugly - I don't like the latest A4. Looks bland to me. The older pre facelift looked better. The same with the new A3 - again looks bland. I thought the A2 was a good car - not a design classic - but solid looking - well packaged, if very pricey.
Porsche Cayenne - not pretty - but you know what - I think I like it - Not a true off roader - but better than most would think - better then the Merc M class, and the X5.
Lexus GS300 - looks like an overgorwn Avensis (old model) - although the new GS looks good (on the ads anyway). The off roader is ugly - the RX 300 or whatever.
Quite like the discovery - although not the best rear end.
New A6 is a looker though, the A8 is nice - although there was someting I liked about the old A8/S8.
307cc - not good at all.
Agree totally, Audis are getting progressively uglier. But... while the new A6 saloon looks really bad (IMHO), the new A6 Avant looks great.>> Guess what - I saw one of these on the road!!
