Eastern Europe insurace

Eastern Europe insurace - redpuma
I fancy touring Eastern Europe in the summer for about 2 months.
Do I need any special insurance or will my fully comp do?
Any ideas of costs?
All help apprietiated.

If you look at your policy booklet, it will tell you, without doubt. Eastern Europe countries falling within EU territorial limits should be included.

For example, I am driving from England to the Czech Republic this summer, and don't need additional cover. I will however obtain a Green Card before leaving.

Before the Czech Republic joined the EU though, I was still able to drive there at no extra cost; I simply had to ask for a (free) Green Card, the same as applies now, and notify the dates I was abroad for.

You would have to check your policy. But I would suspect you may only have 3rd party cover. There may well be restrictions on how long you can be away in one stretch. Cover outside of EC countries may be excluded (I can't remember how many are in or out of the EC nowadays).
Play safe, talk to your insurer and make sure you have full cover. Don't forget the breakdown and recovery side of things as well as medical insurance - the E111 system is OK for emergencies, but not for repatriation or recuperation.

I would echo Martin123. Typically you are offered the legal minimum of insurance for a country by default. Now in the UK the legal minimum of insurance is pretty much the same as your legal liability. THere are countries in the world where that is not true and your legal minimum insurance can be considerable more limited than your legal liabilty.

Don't take a chance, don't try and do it on the cheap, don't try and guess. Contact your insurer, tell them what you are doing, and get their agreement and cover details in writing.

Also check what you are supposed to do in the event of an incident - are you entitled to get the vehicle repaired and claim back later ? do you have to get repairs authorised ? how ? What about crime/incident references ? etc. etc.
