Particularly with a Skoda Fabia wrapped around it. Does anyone have any first hand experience with these engines?. I think the Audi A2 also has it fitted. Besides the obvious power/torque differences, how does it compare to the 1.9 TDI?. I read that its a 3 cylinder, does that increase noise or vibration compared to the 4-cyl?.
It would be for my wife who doesn't really care about outright power or engine performance as long as its the equal of her current 1.6 petrol Astra and better than her last diesel which was a non-turbo 1.7 M-reg Corsa.

Never actually driven one so can't comment about the actual experience but the engine is a 1.4 3 cylinder which uses the PD technology as in the 1.9 VAG Tdi, it is also fitted with balancer shafts to counteract some of the vibrations.
It's definately better than the 1.7 Corsa and whilst it's down slightly on outright horsepower the torque will give it more pull than tha astra.
It's used in the VW Lupo and Polo, Skoda Fabia and the Seat Arosa

Although it has had a power increase in the later A2's it is not as punchy as some 4 cyl engines of similar capacity, i.e. DCi 100 Renault and 100ps 1.6 Ford PSA diesel.

The Renault is 80/100 bhp, the Ford/PSA is 92/110 bhp.

I had two years trouble free motoring with an A2 1.4TDi 75PS. No problem coping with moving the A2 around and motorway speeds were comfortable with loads of torque still left to give you extra boost when needed. The A2 only weighs just over a tonne, the extra weight of the Fabia may inihbit the performance a little, but 50mpg was commonplace in the A2.

Had a VW Polo 1.4 TDi as a hire car about four years ago. Nice car and very economical. I would think the 1.9 would be the better performance choice.

50 mpg should be commonplace in an A2 1.4 TDi, I would have thought. My brother regularly gets over 60 mpg from his C3 1.4 HDI.
By the way, Skoda quote 61.4 mpg, combined, for a 75 bhp Fabia 1.4 TDi. Is it not the same engine in an A2?

Sorry, I meant 110 re the Ford PSA 1.6.

The 1.9 TDi in the polo is quality and delivers the power very well. If ya dont need the performance then go for the 1.4tdi. But a little tip, dont let her test drive the 1.9 cos then she will never go back to 1.4, as i experienced when my sister was buying one!

Thanks for all the replies. I was just wondering how the 1.4 performed and from what I have read, not badly at all so the search will include those too.

Drove that engine in a few rental A2s. Feels quite alive because of the high maximum torque but gets a bit noisy over 90 mph. Maximum consumption was ~ 43 mpg (4 people, AC on, constantly around or over 100 mph on the autobahn). 50 - 58 mpg when in less of a hurry.

If she isn't dead set on this particular car/engine, then a couple of reliable alternatives would be the new 1.4 diesel in the Corolla producing 89 bhp, and the Mazda3 with the same 110 bhp 1.6 diesel as was previously mentioned that's fitted in the Ford Focus, Citroen C4 etc.
