Citroen C5 Estate - any opinions - Scott#_Lewis
Need a new Estate as got 2 kids and a dog and seems a good deal at Auction at the moment seems to be Citroen C5 estates, say the 2.2 LX litre HDI ones.

Wondered if anyone has any opinions on them - are they any good?

Used to have C5 2.2 HDi saloon - was a nice car. The 2.2 HDi is not particularly economical though - 40mpg overall is about as good as it gets unless you do a lot of motorway runs at 70mph. Its also a big heavy engine so front tyres wear quite quickly. The 2.0 HDi 110 is a good engine too - more economical and more free-revving than the 2.2, but the 2.2 is extremely quiet and refined at all engine speeds.

If you can, the 2.2 SX is the one to go for as you get the Hydractive 3+ suspension system and cruise control over the other SX models. The HA3+ system has additional spheres and gives a more comfortable ride over rough surfaces and better handling when pressing on. The C5 is not the sharpest car in its class and feels best when crusing - its not something you want to blast around country lanes all day long. Some people I lent mine to felt it was a bit soft and wallowy for their liking but for what I was using it for - covering big mileages - it was ideal as it was very comfortable.

The C5 is ideal for B road bashing. Its suspension absorbs all the ruts, changes in surface and ripples found all over Yorkshire's roads.

The 2.0 HDI has more low down torque than the 2.2 (i.e. below 2000 revs).

The only way to buy a C5 is used, I'd look at 53 reg and newer as they had 99% of the problems eliminated.

I agree with the above. My (used)C5 2.2SX returns 42mpg on long runs with cruise+ aircon; 39 normal mix. Servicing costs not excessive but watch out for pollen/FAP filter changes "recommended" by Citroen at 50k (dealer quote £300). A "weeping" front shock would also cost (allegedly) £120 parts + £200+ labour as the hydraulics "have to be completely recalibrated". Otherwise very comfortable to drive. I chose the hatch because a)it was a good deal and b)I was very aware of crosswinds in the estate.

The old 110 bhp 2.0 HDI doesn't have a particulate filter, nor does it require the fuel additive, so big savings would be made on replacing these items (even though Citroen maintenance schedule tells owners that the particulate filter does not need changing - merely cleaning).
