Oh my god - the Daleks can now negotiate stairs...

we are doomed
? - Robin Reliant
Bet they still can't do a handbrake turn.

loved it when it said. elevate, elevate !
its learnt some new tricks ;-)

Firstly I am *LOVING* this series of Doctor Who.

Secondly I watched tonights episode with a 3 year old behind the sofa peering over my shoulder. A rather nice echo of my father and I.

Naff all to do with Motoring, but for once I don't care*. Goodnesss knows how they will keep it up, but I love it.

Probably as soon as someone mentions Billie Piper.

Whoops!

I'm sorry. A sweet Dalek is NOT fair. I mean, it gets depressed about not having any friends and commits suicide.
? - Ex-Moderator
It was a bit Marvin.

But if it was a time war, then I'm guessing that they can travel through time. So why can't Daleks from the past travel to the future and rise again ?
? - Cymrogwyllt
I was behind the sofa.

Since the Dalek downloaded the internet I presume that it could now drive cars. (attempt at motoring link)
? - Robin Reliant
One of SWMBO's teachers, a part time actor, drove a Dalek during the William Hartnell period.

I knew the original Milky Bar Kid.
? - Pugugly {P}
Brilliant - pure magic, especially that bit when the Doctor first met the Dalek in the darkened room. British television at its best, knocking Hollywood into a cocked hat. Well worth this year's licence fee. Stunning production values. Filmed at the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff by the way.
? - Dynamic Dave
Thats it! Go spoil it for someone who hasn't yet watched tonight's episode yet.

I do hope the rust worms of a 1000 daleks infest your beds tonight and bury themselves in certain orifices.

From someone who has never watched a single Doctor Who epsiode (new or otherwise) can I just say I have no idea what you're on about and you are all crazy?

Thanks!

Can I just say that rectifying that may save your Backroom registration and will certainly improve your credibility and success with girls.
? - PoloGirl
From someone else who has never watched a single Doctor Who episode... Adam, if you ever refer to Dr Who while seeking success with girls, you're doomed.

? - madux
It worked for me.
? - Sofa Spud
Bringing this topic back to motoring, didn't someone build a giant Dalek on a mini floorpan once?

I love the Daleks - they're reason I'd ever want to watch Dr.Who.

Cheers, SS
? - Citroënian {P}
I'm a bit behind on this series, but am absolutely loving it too. Seen them all apart from tonight's (sky plus will sort that!), but watched the one with Charles Dickens last night.

A friend of mine (ahem) awoke this morning after having nightmares for the first time in as long as he can remember.

Brilliant, I can't see how they can keep it up either, but I hope against hope that they do.

A bit like Brosnan as Bond (*and his cars bruumn, motoring link), Ecclestone & Piper are ideal in their roles.

Best bit so far? The Slitthereeen or whatever they were called, looking up to the sky in downing street saying "Oh, Bol... (boom)

Great!!

Yes Boss. I humbly retract my foolish statement forthwith!

>>Adam, if you ever refer to Dr Who while seeking success with girls, you're doomed.<<

Whenever I've mentioned it in the past, they've almost smiled and walked off to get a drink.....

...they never came back - but they smiled!

Well you can forget sat nav and all those silly gizmo's cars are festooned witht hese days I want a "REGENERATE" button on my dashboard!

Must admit the new series is better than I thought it would be even allowing for the passing of time. Have seen some old episodes and the Daleks feature film on cable in the last year or 2 and my young son wasn't impressed by all the ramps needed for these intergallactic warriors to move anywhere. He much prefers the new version - let's face it you can't see the zips on the costumes anymore can you.

Can't wait for the Cybermen to reappear - now they were really scaryyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!

For anyone who missed it (me) its repeated tonight (sunday) at 7pm on bbc3

I'm really enjoying the new series but I'm concerned at the number of potential story lines being closed down - all of the Time Lords are dead, all of the Daleks are gone. Next thing, he won't be able to get parts for tha Tardis (hang on. I think that was true when thingy Hartnell was driving it).

Ah well, it's the best thing on telly at the moment, so let's just enjoy it while it's there. I hear the tv series of Hitch Hikers Guide is going to be repeated. I guess if they remade it it would have to have Michael Winner in it (Don't Panic !) ?

"it would have to have Michael Winner in it"

Another one for my 'avoid at all costs' list then.

Since Dr Who has only just been revived, I was surprised to hear that the new incumbent has already stated he is only doing one series. Why?

The good thing about a series to do with time travel is that anything can be changed just by popping backwards and forwards a few years.
..............? - Avant
Knock knock.

Who's there?

Mister.

Mr. Who.

So Dr. Who's become a surgeon....

Glad there are two other pepole in the world who have never seen it - are we the only three?
..............? - Vansboy
& here IS your motoring link - from the B'roomer who hasn't got a telly, so not sure if Daleks have had their indicators altered to comply with current EU directives, but....
the original flahing lights on their (heads??) were from front Mini indicators, of the time - do they still have them??

not when the TV license van comes round we don't!
..............? - BobbyG
On that note, what exactly does the TV detector van consist of? Does it have any hi-tec eqpt or just a list of houses that don't have a licence?
..............? - Altea Ego
well

It used to have big directional aerial and a receiver that could actually pickup the oscilations from your tube and see what channel you were watching.

These days

Its a man with a PC and a list of postcodes and house numbers. There is no detector van,
..............? - Pugugly {P}
front Mini indicators

Seems they have been ditched in favour of some sleek LED jobbies. Perhaps the Daleks suffered at the demise of that another time/space continum issue - the demise of Rover.
..............? - Altea Ego
I cant remember now (it was only yesterday evening I know) did it still have the sink plunger?
..............? - Welliesorter
did it still have the sink plunger?

Not only did it have the plunger, it was used as a weapon against someone who made fun of it.

The dalek was remarkably true to the originals, with a few innovations, notably the swivelling mechanism. The flashing lights on top were obviously not from a Mini but they didn't look particularly high tech.
..............? - madux

Yes, but it is now a square sink plunger.
..............? - Dynamic Dave
Yes, but it is now a square sink plunger.

It was able to mould itself to various shapes. Circular when it was pointing at things, oval when it clamped itself over the gob of the mouthy yank, and square when it assessed the keypad.

"oval when it clamped itself over the gob of the mouthy yank"

Make that "from one of the B'roomers who hasn't got a telly"

In fact, while I have seen at least one episode of Doctor Who - probably most recently in the 1970s, I can honestly, hand on heart, say that I have never watched "Top Gear", "Fifth Gear" or any other gear on telly.

Beat that.
..............? - Stargazer {P}
The dalek episode was the first I have seen since I gave up with Colin Baker (Grew up with Patrick Trougton, Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker).

The story and production were fine but I just didnt like the format...all done and dusted in 45 minutes, no cliffhangers to keep you waiting until the next saturday. Dr Who was one of the few programs I could sometimes start a 30 minute program watching behind the sofa even during the incidental music.

Mind you did enjoy watching the daleks, bring back the cybermen and sea devils.

Motoring link....remember the Jon Pertwee seasons when Dr Who was limited to Earth by the time lords as a punishment. That was the era of Katie manning, the Brigadier, the master and Bessie the remote controlled car.

StarGazer

Patrick Trougton, Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker

Agreed - a generational thing.

The reason that there isn't a cliffhanger thing I suppose is to try and capture the generation below us that have the attention span of a flea and want the instant gratification - even the Archers have stopped doing this !

I personally think its a flawed concept, 24 is the evidence, twenty four consecutive episodes with a cliff-hanger every time.

Me ? As a kid I had Cyberman nightmares and ended up sleeping with the landing light on ! The head and shoulders in the "museum" sent a real shiver down my spine 35 years later....BBC worth every penny.
..............? - Ex-Moderator
Daleks gave me the usual nightmares and involved various behind-the-settee type moments.

But it was the cybermen who completely freaked me out. They gave me nightmares and [sad I know] even seeing the head of the cyberman in the museum made me remember.

Since I was Troughton, Pertweee and Tom Baker, then I guess we must be of an age. Although I did see Hartnell at Saturday Morning Pictures at the Odeon in town - quite frequently - I think it used to alternate with various Black Bob and Lassie movies.
..............? - Pugugly {P}
Lassie a male dog with a female name from Yorkshire... how very 21st Centuary !
