& here IS your motoring link - from the B'roomer who hasn't got a telly, so not sure if Daleks have had their indicators altered to comply with current EU directives, but....
the original flahing lights on their (heads??) were from front Mini indicators, of the time - do they still have them??

WHAT? now i don't believe that! everyone has a telly!
|
|
not when the TV license van comes round we don't!
|
|
On that note, what exactly does the TV detector van consist of? Does it have any hi-tec eqpt or just a list of houses that don't have a licence?
|
well
It used to have big directional aerial and a receiver that could actually pickup the oscilations from your tube and see what channel you were watching.
These days
Its a man with a PC and a list of postcodes and house numbers. There is no detector van,

front Mini indicators
Seems they have been ditched in favour of some sleek LED jobbies. Perhaps the Daleks suffered at the demise of that another time/space continum issue - the demise of Rover.

I cant remember now (it was only yesterday evening I know) did it still have the sink plunger?
|
did it still have the sink plunger?
Not only did it have the plunger, it was used as a weapon against someone who made fun of it.
The dalek was remarkably true to the originals, with a few innovations, notably the swivelling mechanism. The flashing lights on top were obviously not from a Mini but they didn't look particularly high tech.

Yes, but it is now a square sink plunger.
|
Yes, but it is now a square sink plunger.
It was able to mould itself to various shapes. Circular when it was pointing at things, oval when it clamped itself over the gob of the mouthy yank, and square when it assessed the keypad.

"oval when it clamped itself over the gob of the mouthy yank"
Brill...I wish I had such a plunger..!

Make that "from one of the B'roomers who hasn't got a telly"
In fact, while I have seen at least one episode of Doctor Who - probably most recently in the 1970s, I can honestly, hand on heart, say that I have never watched "Top Gear", "Fifth Gear" or any other gear on telly.
Beat that.

The dalek episode was the first I have seen since I gave up with Colin Baker (Grew up with Patrick Trougton, Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker).
The story and production were fine but I just didnt like the format...all done and dusted in 45 minutes, no cliffhangers to keep you waiting until the next saturday. Dr Who was one of the few programs I could sometimes start a 30 minute program watching behind the sofa even during the incidental music.
Mind you did enjoy watching the daleks, bring back the cybermen and sea devils.
Motoring link....remember the Jon Pertwee seasons when Dr Who was limited to Earth by the time lords as a punishment. That was the era of Katie manning, the Brigadier, the master and Bessie the remote controlled car.

Agreed - a generational thing.
The reason that there isn't a cliffhanger thing I suppose is to try and capture the generation below us that have the attention span of a flea and want the instant gratification - even the Archers have stopped doing this !
I personally think its a flawed concept, 24 is the evidence, twenty four consecutive episodes with a cliff-hanger every time.
Me ? As a kid I had Cyberman nightmares and ended up sleeping with the landing light on ! The head and shoulders in the "museum" sent a real shiver down my spine 35 years later....BBC worth every penny.
|
Daleks gave me the usual nightmares and involved various behind-the-settee type moments.
But it was the cybermen who completely freaked me out. They gave me nightmares and [sad I know] even seeing the head of the cyberman in the museum made me remember.
Since I was Troughton, Pertweee and Tom Baker, then I guess we must be of an age. Although I did see Hartnell at Saturday Morning Pictures at the Odeon in town - quite frequently - I think it used to alternate with various Black Bob and Lassie movies.

Lassie a male dog with a female name from Yorkshire... how very 21st Centuary !
