Roadcraft video - kam
After being outbid on ebay yet again for the video "roadcraft" i am still trying to obtain a copy.Wanting to take the IAM course i thought i'd get a copy of the video so as to learn and practice the "correct" way of driving before doing an observed drive. Anybody out there got any ideas where to get a copy?

Rather than do the IAM course, why not do an LGV or PCV course and test (assuming you haven't done so already). I don't know about comparative costs, but you'd actually gain entitlement to drive extra categories of vehicles, which you don't with the IAM.

Can't help thinking this is a tad more expensive than buying a video.

Yep! I meant relation to the IAM course, not the Roadcraft video!!!

Try www.spservices.co.uk. They used to have it in their catalogue.

Easiest way is to join your local IAM group - most publications are available (incl Highway code, Roadcraft) and are often at doscount price.

There is no need to teach yourself the "right" techniques before you join. My first drive with an observer was an assessment, to enable my observer to form an opinion about my driving style and formulate the taeching plan.

And my observer loaned me Roadcraft for some weeks, so I didn't need to buy my own copy...

My local IAM group has a number of videos that are loaned free to all memebers of the group. Try calling the local group secretary and ask if they do the same.

www.tvgam.org.uk/shop/6.html has this video for £12.99

I've been thinking of doing the Advanced test myself. Anyone have any idea of the costs involved??

I did it last year - £85 plus whatever petrol you use on the observed runs (which was about £50~60 in my case). The number of runs depends on your ability and what needs to be taught - this was five before a mock test and a few following in the run-up to the main test.

Deryck, are there any other benefits to completing the advanced test, apart from the smugness of knowing you're a better driver than most others??

e.g. insurance discounts perhaps?? I'm 28 with a full NCB but I still pay fortunes for my insurance and I'm very keen to reduce my premium if I can.

I'm currently under training for the IAM course and can confirm that it is well worth while. I'm learning to loose a great number of bad habits learnt over 25+ years. Some companies apparently offer an additional discount but a discount is no good unless the top line is comparable.

Insurance should be cheaper. I get 15% off my bike and car policies. The trick though is to tell the insurance company about your IAM membership after they have given you their best quote. You will probably have to supply a copy of your certificate.

Some B'roomers may recall, I bought Mrs V a 1/2 day with www.ridedrive.co.uk... & she was MOST pleased (surprisingly, according to some of you!!) with the time spent with the Police officer, on her session.

A very rewarding exercise.

I've got the IAM video that you're welcome to have for the price of postage, if you're interested.

Drop me a line back here and then I'll e-mail one of the mods with my new e-mail address to pass on.

Direct Line give no discount for IAM but were still hundreds (literally) cheaper for me than the company which IAM advertise in their brochure, even after the 15% discount.

Insurance "can" be cheaper but as the other replies have stated it will depend on your circumstances. The foillowing is a link to the Advanced Driving website tinyurl.com/bakat (NOT the IAM but very useful). This gives a list of companies offering a discount - I have yet to try them as I renewed insurance before passing the test.
