Removing greasey marks - CheapNcheerfull
Hi all,
Any advice on how to remove greasy marks from door upholstery. Car has recently been in for accident repair or so called repairs but that's another story. Where they have removed the doors panels they obvious could not be bothered to where glove or even wash the grease/ol from there hands so I now have annoying grease marks on my door panels :o(. I'll get on my soap box about the repairs on another thread.

Try working a bit of neat washing up liquid into the marks (if you mean the actual fabric part of the door panel)then wipe over with damp cloth, or if you mean the PVC part, should come off easy enough with a solution of washing up liquid and water! Have you let it be known that youre unhappy, sounds obvious, but they really should treat a customers car better!

Try sugar soap and a soft nail brush if it's plastic trim. Dunno about fabric though, I use aerosol foam upholstry cleaner which got scuff marks off the seat back where various children has pedalled their little feet (bless...)
As always, try out on a less visible area first though.

My mother gave me for Christmas something called Janie Dry Stick Spot Cleaner. It contains a stick of chalk like powder that you rub into oily stains on fabric. Leave it for a while and then use the brush on the top of the box to rub the 'chalk' off.

It is absolutely superb.

I've just read, for the first time, the side of the packet. 'Natural solvent-free and safe for any color, any fabric, Janie goes on dry, absorbs oil and brease based stains and never leaves a ring. It's nontoxic, nonflammable and odorless. Made of natural components, Janie is a powder in stick form that is equally effective on clothing carpet or upholstery.' That sounds really eco-friendly, but I assure you it is superb.

I think I'd start with a bit of white spirit then a touch of shampoo to finish off. Grease needs a solvent to get it moving initially.

Use Groom by Ambersil (black & orange cans in Halfords)- great on grease and it won't damage either vinyl, fabric or leather. As always, test a small area first though. Spray on, let the foam soak in and wipe off with a damp cloth. Repeat if necessary. Easy.

Most greasy marks will dissolve easily in ordinary white spirit, which at the same time is not a strong enough solvent to do any harm whatsoever to paintwork, upholstery, etc.
If in doubt, rub a small amount on the surface with a white cloth to check that it's just the greasy mark coming off and not a surface colour.
For the same reason, white spirit works likewise as a perfectly good tar remover - no need to buy proprietary products.

I managed to remove half a bottle of suntan lotion from the black upholstery of my car using a recommendation from here.....

Tesco ownbrand glass cleaner.

Brilliant, and left no trace of a mark.

Cellulose thinners on a nice absorbent cloth. Test an area first!! Fabric only and NOT the PVC. If you wipe all the seat you will be amazed at all the muck that comes off! No residue left and no smell after airing. Shifts grease/oil/ink beautifully.
