Can anyone comment on these as to the best model to get and which engines are the most reliable?

I'm think about N - R reg on a XJ series

Why not have a look at HJ's Car by Car Breakdown (link on the top left hand side of this site)?

Generally speaking, Jaguar reliability and build quality improved dramatically from H-regs onwards once Ford had turned the company around.
