Reduced road tax - J Bonington Jagworth
HJ says (so I wouldn't dream of arguing) that cars registered before 1/3/2001 don't qualify for reduced rate VED.

I hadn't realised this. I don't suppose it means that I can pay the rate in force in 1989 for my car...

I not sure this is right.
As I understand is, cars registered after 1/3/01 can qualify for a reduced rate depending on their CO2 emissions, cars before that time get a reduced rate if their engine is under a 1.5.
I think that's right.
A friend was talking about this recently. It means that he pays full whack for his 2.0 litre 145, but gets a discount for his 3.2 litre V6 147 GTA.

You're spot on BazzaBear, except the pre 2001 threshold is 1.4 litres

Are you sure? Wasn't it 950cc or something equally ridiculous? I just remember the budget headline that small cars would get reduced tax and being please, thinking that Mrs P's 1.2 Clio would qualify. Got home to read the details and read that there were only 2 or 3 cars on sale that qualified.

Are you sure?

Yes. My wife's '97 Almera 1400 is a reduced rate. Actually just checked the DVLA website, and the threshold is 1549cc (eh?). So BazzaBear is spot on.

Post 1/3/2001, you're on the CO2 emissions.

OK!
