Silly question, can anybody recommend quiet good quality 225/45 R17 tyres.

I know these are low profile and hence noisy but.. To replace Michelin Pilot Primacy's on a new Golf tdi 140.

I bought some Dunlop SP01s, advertised as "the quiet tyre" but IMHO they were no better than any others - mine were in a 215/55x16. I haven't found a particularly quiet tyre - Continental EcoContacts seemed a bit noisier than the Dunlops on my Saab 9-5, but the Michelin Primacys are generally reckoned to be a good all round compromise between roadholding, comfort, long life and noise. Unfortunately you're likely to lose something else if you go for quiet.

I've just put on a set of SP9000s, and they are a bit noisier but they give impressive results in terms of driveability.

Which Recommends
Continental Sport Contact 2 or Goodyear Eagle f1 GS
other recommendations are Falken GRB FK 451, which i have never heard of.

Conti Sport contacts are quiet but seem to wear out quite quickly, however I had some Goodyear Eagle GSD3's which gave better life, as good grip and arguably less noise than the Conti's and they are cheaper too.

I like all of the Michelin Pilot series tyres, but they are fiercly expensive.

Best quote so far for the Pilots (105.75) are Costco, Reading puts them in line with the other makes i mentioned.

Just found some Yokohama AVS dB Decible - claim to be quieter without sacrificing performance. Priced at £136.19 delivered and fitted from www.blackcircles.com/

For all round performance including noise look no further than the Goodyear F1 Gsd3. evo tyre test winner 2002. Auto Express tyre winner 2003. Which best buy 2004. Auto Express product Honours winner 2004. Autocar High Performance tyre winner 2004. On my car I have tried Dunlop SP 8080 Bridgestone S03 Goodyear F1 Gsd3 and I have had Pirelli Pzero Rosso recently fitted (2000miles). I am changing back to the F1 tyres as soon as Goodyear have the rears in stock. Quite the best tyre I have ever driven on. Totally and utterly disagree with HJ about Mich, the only thing I have ever found with them is that the "breakaway" is predictable as soon as the weather shows the slightest hint of moisture. I do not know of anyone in the trade who drives on Mich or anyone in the trade who reccommends them. Except the ATS Euromaster chain who are owned by Mich and X5 owners on the 20" rims.

I should have added that you should be looking at under a £100 for an FI fully fitted...

I fitted BMW fitment Mich pilots to my BMW 540i about 500 miles ago. They are very quiet and very comfortable, seeming to absorb irregularities etc far better than the Pirellis.

Anyway, a couple of days ago it was pretty wet. Always found that the bends on motorway slip roads are a good test of a tyre as they are often oily as well as wet. The pilots stuck like glue - I was pressing it to see how they stuck.

Which Michelin Pilots? I am under the impression that Pilot is to Michelin what Eagle is to Goodyear.

225x55x16 Primacy BMW fitment.

Incidently I used www.etyres.co.uk who came along and fitted them at home. Painless and efficient and a pretty competitive price.

Thanks for the feedback, 225 55 16 is also my size, will have a look.

You are a wealthy man!!! Just checked the site you mentioned, they were quoting £110 for 205/55zr16 Mich Primacy. Going rate is around £85 - £90 for these tyres!!!!! Regarding your Rav4 query I sell a lot of Synchrone tyres without many adverse comments except the price. My daughter has a Rav4 and the Bridgestones on hers are excellent. Also worth considering are Pirelli Scorpion and Goodyear Wrangler. These are far more competitively priced than Mich and I would doubt that Lady Meditek or yourself would notice any difference in performance.

Went right off mixed tyres when I fitted some Yokos to the front of a car and nearly switched ends at the first corner. If my ageing memory serves me, it was a Fiat Abarth! On a much later corner it switched ends (on a newly gravelled country road) after I'd put them on the back. Vague memories of driving backwards at 70, switching ends again, and coming to rest with the front end impacted in an open metal gate.

Since then, I've always fitted the same tyres all round.
Quiet Tyres - Ed_too_much_m4
I would rather not mix but but the pilots on the back have a good 6 months + in them. Cannot afford the £400+ for a full set.

I just acquired a 2003 Rav-4 5 door for my wife. It has Toyo tyres that look just over half worn.

As a life long Michman I prefer to fit those in time. Does anyone know much about the 'Synchrone'? Does anyone have an opinion on the best tyre for this car?

Thanks

I've just changed the Pilots on my C5 for Continental 'Touring Contacts'. £305 for 4 of them fully fitted and balanced. They are 'h' rated but that doesn't seem to be an issue for me. I find them smoother and quieter than the Michelins and at that price I'm not too bothered if they don't wear so long. I can see no difference whatsoever in terms of grip either in the wet or dry. In fact I'm delighted with them. The Pilots were going to be well over £100 each. They are definitely a quiet tyre. The Continental 'Ecos' are also said to be quiet.

The rating may be an issue for the insurance company if it doesn't match what it should be. They'll use any excuse not to pay up!

I was pondering on replacing the two rear tyres on our C5 for Continental Premium Contact H rated tyres not too long ago. It was the subject of a topic in this forum. I checked with my insurance company and the underwriter confirmed it was not a problem, as long as I never exceeded the speed rating of the tyres (which is 130 mph). As there is no chance of me doing that, I went ahead and had them fitted. They fitted H rated tyres to the 2.2 HDI SX, as far as I know (ours is an Exclusive).

I have to say that I haven't noticed any change in the ride comfort, handling or noise. The car has Pilot Primacy on the front wheels.
