Brilliant!

From VBH and her "mummy" driving the Lambo, to someone adding a Maserati to his collection of Ferraris and driving round a snow covered racetrack and skidding into a barrier!

Brilliant!
Tonight's Fifth Gear - Citroënian {P}
Didn't get the VBH & VBH Snr bit, but it was entertaining. They're repeating Driven on Men & Motors at the same time and they've got to the bit where they lost the plot - car sumo? No wonder it's gone.

Tonight's Fifth Gear - Pugugly {P}
Yes oh Yes, the Range Rover Sport, I feel an "I want" moment coming on !!! - But not in that colour !
Tonight's Fifth Gear - v8man
I'm with you on that Pugugly. An awsome vehicle but I fear it will be some time before I get one unless my employer gives me a significant raise! My old Rangie will have to on a bit longer.
--
\"Nothing less than 8 cylinders will do\"
Tonight's Fifth Gear - Sofa Spud
I just saw the bit with the Maserati. It looked like it was uncontrollable at 30 mph on a wet track. Either that or it was so huge it just looked like it was going slowly!

Cheers, Sofa Spud
Tonight's Fifth Gear - Big Bad Dave
Please don?t tell me we?re going to have to watch that gormless grinning wealthy idiot on the box everytime he adds a supercar to his collection. I?m not interested in horses either, that was a lame idea. VBH in a Lambo is always gonna be watchable but for me, it has become a weak show. At least Plato wasn?t in it. Probably gone back to his alternate evil universe with his new goatee beard.
Tonight's Fifth Gear - Bill Payer
Why do 'they' (car progs on TV) insist on doing something with 4x4's that 99.99% of owners will never do?
I vividly remember seeing a Range Rover on the news being towed off the Silverstone car park quagmire by a tractor a few yrs ago - they're almost as useless as anything else when they've got road tyres on.
Clarkson did the same thing with an X3, and when it quickly got stuck said ?send for a Range Rover? and that got stuck too.
Tonight's Fifth Gear - Altea Ego
I ended up going back to painting the hall.
Tonight's Fifth Gear - mountainkat
have to admit Fifth Gear is probably the best of a bad bunch - it would make a nice change to see a motoring program on the TV that actually gave people some decent info/views on everyday motors - ie affordable to the masses, instead of the crappy "max power" culture that these programs seem to have adopted - no wonder we're all driving more like idiots everyday !!
Tonight's Fifth Gear - Tomo
"it would make a nice change to see a motoring program on the TV that actually gave people some decent info/views on everyday motors"

I'm sure someone will, as soon as they reckon they can get enough viewers; that may be a long time, though (include me out for a start, I have only to look out of the window to see boring cars).

I agree with Tomo. People may criticise Clarkson et al for being obsessed with supercars, but the audience figures show there is a market for his content and presenting style. I remember Top Gear being desperately dull 10-15 years ago with William Woolard and Chris Goffey driving dull mainstream cars and prattling on about mpg and split-fold rear seats... blah blah blah.

Tonight's Fifth Gear - Big Bad Dave
Yeah, maybe I?m in a minority but I?m not interested in cars for playboys, I like big saloons with big engines and big boots for my growing family. A friend offered me the chance to drive his Ferrari Spyder (I think it was called) a while back, but I?d just started a pint and I couldn?t be bothered getting of my stool. Had it been a big Audi, I would have torn the keys from his fingers. Motoring shows just don?t cater for my tastes at all.

I like the stuff Mike Brewer does on Home and Leisure with Ed China. They buy and renovate modern classics like 205s and minis and MR2s on a budget then try to sell at a profit. It makes me wanna get my spanners out and get stuck in. There?s much better stuff on satelite for regular blokes.

Range Rovers on wagon weels... I was embarrased for it.
Tonight's Fifth Gear - David Horn
Slightly off topic, but I got passed on Friday night on the M6 in pouring rain by a Range Rover doing well over 80 while towing a caravan...

Did anyone ever see the video showing the original Range Rover being rolled simply by swerving at 50MPH?
Tonight's Fifth Gear - Dynamic Dave
Did anyone ever see the video showing the original Range Rover being rolled simply by swerving at 50MPH?

Yes, it was repeated (yet again) on Discovery H&L at 4:40pm Monday night.
Tonight's Fifth Gear - Leon on Derv
And for our motoring entertainment next week.... they are going to be crash testing lamposts!!!

Leon
Tonight's Fifth Gear - Ed V
Do we want programmes on Modeo's in traffic jams (how long does the a/c last?) or something entertaining?
Tonight's Fifth Gear - Pugugly {P}
Got to agree about the RR's wheels - horrid. Srill it ansoulute sex on oh so dodgy wheels.....I want I want 'til it hurts...
Tonight's Fifth Gear - Big Bad Dave
"something entertaining?"

If you found last night?s program entertaining, can I recommend The Telletubbies. You?ll be glued to it.
Tonight's Fifth Gear - Adam {P}
I'm hooked on Teletubbies. I just know something's going down in Teletubby land. That yellow one's going to cop it next week...I just know he is.

Adam,

That's "24" not Teletubbies.
Tonight's Fifth Gear - Adam {P}
I did think it was odd when a couple of MP5's were brandished and a couple of cars were chasing each other.

I just put it down to me growing older and more boring!

Tonight's Fifth Gear - Dynamic Dave
Any boys racers out there who are considering lowering their car, perhaps watching 5th gear tonight *might* make you change your minds. If you missed it, it's repeated this Friday at 7:30pm.

Two identical Mondeos in a head on crash, one just 2" lower than the other, and the lowered one came off worse.

It takes a lot to normally unerve me, but after seeing what the 4wd did to the small car when it hit it side on at 60mph, made me feel quite queezy. OK, the small car was 10 yrs old and didn't have side impact beams, but even so, I don't think the result would have been much different if it did have.
Tonight's Fifth Gear - martint123
I suspect the result would have been much the same with two similar cars in that test. Front of car doing 60mph into side of 10 year old car - no chance.

There must be a speed above where it is just not economicaly possible to protect the occupants. I was just thinking to myself that some of these cars with 9 airbags, at what? £300-£400 apiece - that would pay for an awful lot of advanced tuition that may keep you out of the accident in the first place.

VBH needs telling off for driving with thos fog lights on as well!
Tonight's Fifth Gear - nick
Why weren't you all watching University Challenge? Fifth Gear is repeated tomorrow anyway.
Tonight's Fifth Gear - v8man
A pointless and totally predictable crash test. Why not go the whole hog and T-bone a 10 year old car with a bus?
--
\"Nothing less than 8 cylinders will do\"
Tonight's Fifth Gear - madf
Boring and not very relevant.. perhaps Transport 2000 had a point?
No couldn't be. Surely not.

But a program going nowhere imo.. Practical application to modern driving? Score nil points... (unless you crash 10 year old Hondas for a day job...)

Plenty of point in my opinion. It shows how dangerous large vehicles such as 4x4s can be in a collision with a smaller vehicle, in part because they seem to follow different regulations from 'ordinary' cars. They've done similar tests with a 4x4 hitting a normal car head on, or from behind and the results are not much more reassuring. It doesn't half make a 4x4 hating part time bunny hugger such as me wonder about buying a 4x4.

There was no real point in the test, in the sense that once it was set up we knew what would happen.

But there was a great value in showing, very graphically, precisely what will happen to your car if you pull out in front of someone doing the NSL. Seeing the driver's door handle accesible through the passenger window was just a bit chilling.

What was utterly and completely pointless was the new bloke standing next to the car amongst a pile of dismembered crash test dummies, having just pointed out that the passenger cell seemed to be now just 6" wide, asking:

"Would anyone have survived, then?"

Duhh!
Tonight's Fifth Gear - Dynamic Dave

The point they were trying to make that at the moment it is virtually impossible to make two cars of different sizes / heights safe regardless of n-cap ratings. The 4wd hit the side of the car a lot higher than a car would have done. All the impact was taken by the doors. Had it been a car that hit it side on then there would have been the added strength of the sill and floor pan. Granted the occupants of the car that got hit side on would probably been mangled, but there might have been a chance that the people on the far side of the car would have survived, unlike when the 4wd pushed the drivers offside doors right over to the passengers side.
Tonight's Fifth Gear - teabelly
Somehow I think sales of large 4x4s will increase after that show..... Now then, should I get a bowler wildcat or an overfinched range rover? Hmm!

Shes such a sweet kid, leave her alone! If it was Penny Mallory flashing her fog lamps...thats a different matter! Looking forward to Top Gear's return on Sunday.
Fifth Gear - Ed V
I won't have anyone knock her front lights.
Fifth Gear - cjehuk
VBH can drive any way she likes in my opinion!

Not sure what the whole problem with fog lights is anyway, especially front fog lights. They are tipped down at the road in near the car anyway. They certainly cause less problems than badly adjusted headlights.

Doesn?t really merit a response as you?re clearly a reprobate but VBH is a fully paid-up racing instructor.
Fifth Gear - bimmer-driver
VBH has proved many times that she most definitley CAN drive. Damn well too
Fifth Gear - school boy
O.K, I give up.
Fifth Gear - mjm
Good for her, she's probably better qualified to do 150+ mph on public roads than certain other people------

So... they're an hour long and studio based now? With features that are more "entertainment on a motoring theme" than motoring journalism, you say? I wonder where they got that idea.

It's a shame they felt they had to change. Top Gear fills its niche very nicely, but Fifth Gear had its own niche to fill as well. Now it seems just like a second rate Top Gear.

Well... I won't rush to judge just yet. Give it a few more weeks.

That pretty much sums up my impression. Top Gear without the humour. There was even a lame comment about their track being better than a certain airfield track. The previous Fifth Gear was good because the journos did more than just drive fast in a fast car. But last night's programme was dull. And two of them kept reminding us that they had been racing drivers. Big deal. Get over it. Yawwwwwn.

As for 5th gear. Used to be great, with some interesting articles, and reviews of cars that I could relate to (i.e those I could afford). But after half an hour of last nights show, I turned my internet on, and came here instead.

Agreed ! They also do a very good rendition of a poor-mans Top Gear ! With the lap time scenario, similar studio environment and largely pointless sideshow articles.

Isn't it a shame there isn't a car programme that actually tells us interesting stuff about real cars we might buy, whilst retaining the odd supercar review.

After watching a few re-runs of some old 5th Gear episodes on Sky (Discovery Real Time), I have to agree with the majority here that the latest showing on Monday night, Channel 5, was dire.
Fifth gear tonight - Fuel tests - BobbyG
I believe in the show tonight they are doing tests on the premium fuels versus supermarket.

I hope they don't come to a definitive scientific answer or that will be the end of half the Backroom threads!!!
Fifth gear tonight - Fuel tests - blue_haddock
Well Optimax did seem to have an advantage in higher powered cars but these are designed to work best with 98RON fuel anyway.
Fifth gear tonight - Fuel tests - teabelly
I'd say most japanese cars are designed to run on optimax minimum. I certainly notice the difference in the skyline - it shows up in the torque and low rev behaviour. With 95 ron it's like a slug. BP is much better but with the optimax it really starts to shine. I drive like a granny most of the time so if I notice it has to be pretty obvious :-)

From a selfish point of view was looking for a more "real world" test especially economy , and tested on diesel cars.
Pity they went for pure performance.

"real world" test especially economy , and tested on diesel cars.

Well, without devoting the entire programme to it they had to narrow the scope somehow. Although I would also be interested in the economy aspects I'm actually pleased they chose performance; in standard form my V70 2.4T pulled noticeably harder on 97 or 98 Octane than on 95 Octane but since software tuning it the difference is huge. I now exclusively run it on 97 octane as a minimum and ideally, Optimax. In standard form the 2.4T produces 285NM torque and BSR (the tuning software provider) claim 410NM. Running on Optimax and with the non standard boost controller I now use, the calculated crank figure of mine was 444NM so even taking in to account any experimental error the engine is certainly taking advantage of the anti-knock properties.

To return to your point, since tuning the engine to really take advantage of the increased octane level it averages about 1.5MPG better than when in standard tune. When it was in standard tune however the economy advantage of 97 and 98 octane fuel was marginal although I used it for the performance advantage.
Fifth gear tonight - Fuel tests - Aprilia
Quite a few Japanese performance cars are designed to run 98+ octane (e.g. Skyline, JDM Subaru etc) - so hardly surprising that they perform better on it.
