Question:
The usual hiss of hydraulic power sterring systems is surely reduced by certain sound-proofing techniques to prevent it from penetrating the cabin.
Would anyone know how this is achieved and what measures manufacturers take to deaden such noise?
|
I would very much doubt that manufacturers specifically look at reducing the hiss from power steering. Compared to all the other noises in a car its insignificant. A lot dont hiss anyway.
I would assume that the general sound deadening techniques used to dampen engine noise, and power train noise and vibrations and feedback are sufficient.

My wifes Mazda 323F (2002 model) unlt only hisses on full lock as does my Passat.
Unless you have peculiarly tuned ears there must be a mechanical problem - I've never been irritated by power steering noises and above a standstill the are overhelmed by other noise.

Interesting comment above about the Mazda 323F. I have a 2001 model year 323 and the steering hiss is just so annoying once the car is warm - and that's just turning the steering wheel a few degrees - no way near full lock. It's very noticeable on the move and sounds like someone is opening a fizzy drinks bottle! Despite 3 and half years of complaining to Mazda it still isn't fixed! They replaced the rack and pump and say they can't do anything else. Missing sound deadening in this area was my next hope....but doesn't look like it!

Like many newer cars, the BMW Mini uses electrohydralic PAS. The hydraulic pump is driven by an electric motor, which can tailor the power input to the power required for steering. This brings significant benefits in fuel consumption. Having heard one of these the other day, I was amazed at how noisy it is. I think some of the noise must come from the electric motor and control gear rapidly changing the power input to the hydraulic pump.

The power steering on my 1994 Peugeot 306 1.9 TD only hisses when on full left or right hand lock and always has done.I used to think that it was due to air in the system which if left could cause damage and hence loss of PAS. Mentioned it to my mechanic, told me not to worry and has never been an issue on MOTs and hasn't got worse. I think it varies from car to car I suppose.
Martin.

The hissing noise on full lock is caused by the pump discharge relief valve lifting to protct hoses and seals, it does'nt do the system much good.
|
Agreed. The Passat manual says do not leave on full lock for more than 15 seconds IIRC. That's why I cut round mini-roundabouts (not).
