Got me a 1.6 51-reg Focus now. Loving it, but there's a rattle/knocking sound at cold start-up, (goes quiet after a couple of miles). I was wondering if anyone had any possible ideas on what this might be? I've been reliably informed it's not the fanbelt (despite the guy who sold it, insisting it was - dodgy dealers...).

Always hard to diagnose noises without hearing them,if it does it when ticking over try using a long screwdriver as a stethoscope, hold one end on the engine, put your ear on the other.
!beware of hair/clothes being caught in moving parts!

My daughter recently bought a Yaris that did this. The rattle was there after a cold start-up and dissapeared after the engine warmed up. Turned out to be piston slap. It was apparent on the test drive (when we had no idea what the problem was)and the supplying dealer said he would sort it....He did nothing. Took it to another Toyota dealer who diagnosed the problem and fitted a new half engine and negotiated with Toyota to pick up the tab. (And they had no idea we have three Yaris's in the family) No idea of the original cause, but thought it might have been honing of the bores to cure poor oil consumption, but without fitting new pistons and /or rings.
I mention this not to be alarmist, but because I think piston slap is nowdays a very unusual problem and fewer and fewer people will have experienced it.
I hope your problem is simpler and you can sort it easily.

Sounds like a simple case of hydraulic tappet rattle during warm up, common but not serious problem on many cars (especially if oil change history is a bit patchy). You can sometimes improve matters by using an engine flush in your old (hot) oil and run for 15 mins just before your next oil change.

iirc the 1.6 engine has solid tappets.

It could be the cam belt hitting the top of the top cover, I had this with my old Mk1 Mondeo, the belt might be ready for changing or need adjusting.

Does the oil pressure light go out straight away when the engine starts?
When were the oil and filter last changed?
Was a genuine oe quality oil filter fitted?
It may be rattling due to the oil draining from the filter when the car is left. Try starting the engine, going for a short run, stopping the engine and immeadiately re-starting it. If it does,t rattle on re-start, it points to the oil filter draining.
