Just a bit of advise please. I need to remove the engine and transmission (together) from my Fiesta XR2i 1.6 1991 for an overhaul and clutch replacement. However I want to remove the unit in one piece from under the car but was wondering is this possible with just Axle stands, and trolley jacks, ie will there be enough clearance to remove the unit from under the car?

That's quite a lot of metal to get in from underneath. The car would have to be lifted up quite a way. Plus an engine and gearbox are mighty heavy things to pull from under a car.
I read about a chap who got a load of strong mates round who lifted the front end of the car up and pushed it back over the engine/transmission (handbrake off of course!).
If I were you I'd disconnect and lower the transmission, then start taking the engine apart in situ. Once you've got the sump and head off it should be easy to lower the rest down. It'll be a lot lighter as well. I presume it's just the engine you're overhauling as I wouldn't takle a gearbox myself, even the Haynes manuals have given up!

I think your idea about dismantling while in situ is the way to go. Yes just the engine I am overhauling and treating the the gearbox to a new clutch, wouldn't know where to start overhauling that puppy!!!

I did what Mike suggested removing the engine and gearbox from a Triumph 2.5PI.
I removed the cylinder head only before jacking up the car front, axle stands and lowering the engine and gearbox with an engine crane onto a thin sheet of wood ( I think it was about 1/8 th inch thich compressed fibre panel.)
Then pulled the engine and gearbox out from underneath using the wood to slide on.
Did it all on my own inculding re-inserting the engine and gerabox. No probblems. No back damage either! (mind you I sued to do a lot of weightlifting whilst younger so that helped...)

It's not a bad method, I can confirm. It's amazing what weight you can slide on a sheet of ply or hardboard.
