hi, is it posible to respray a small area say a 3 inch diameter circle on a metallic without having to have the whole panel resprayed ?

It's possible, but finding a good bodyshop that can do the feathering in without it being noticed is the hard part.
|
It is hard, as when the original paint was sprayed, the metallic or mica flakes will lay at an angle, distribution and depth, dependant upon a variety of factors with respect to the method of application, therefore, when the panel is resprayed, it is impossible to get it to match exactly, although some bodyshops can do an excellent job, if one was to inspect throroughly in all lighting conditions and angles, you would see a difference.

I?m an amateur at this, but as most/all metallics are two-coat, surely it?s impossible as you?re trying to feather paint into a lacquered surface, then lacquering over the whole lot?
I have partially painted the top of a front wing that got scratched but I painted to the fold where the horizontal and vertical surfaces met ? it looked OK.

Pearlescent metallic paint is the easiest one to blend in because of the colour difference depending on where you're standing whilst looking at the panel.
With a can of aerosol paint it would be near on impossible to get a match, but with a paint gun it's a lot easier (he says loosely) because you can control the amount of thinners added to the paint when spraying. The thinners have a lot to do with how the metallic flakes in the paint ends up. More thinners added and the flakes will stand up more, less thinners and the flakes will lay down more. This is how the experts manage to get the shading of the paint looking the same as the existing metallic paint - or so I've been told.

First key the complete panel with a grey scotchbrite pad. Mask off the whole panel. You can then blend in the repaired area localy, but you should then laquer the complete panel. The lighter the paint colour, generaly, the harder it will be to fade out the base colour. Profesional painters rarely match metalic colours panel to panel. That said, you possibly would get away blendig into a small area on a door bottom or similar area. Yes I am a profesional paint sprayer.

I've done the bottom of a rear inner door post using a spray can. Worked quite well. Would not attempt a flat panel as the matching is critical but a door post is less likely to be noticed (dark metallic blue)
