May be the car security manufacturers will hvae to pull their finger out and think of another unique piece of human property to use as a security key. Why not a voice recognition that includes a date and time? This would stop a recording being used.

Thinking about the problem of using a finger to enable a car to be started. How do you get your car serviced without being there or have a parking valet return you car? Perhaps they will have to think again.

The finger print technology might be great but all of the security aspects have not been thought threw carefully enough.

Wel, there is a guy in KL who got carjacked and stripped of everything including his index finger to start his new S Class

Ah, thats why the more secure fingerprint scanners look for temerature and a pulse then.

That won't be much consolation to the owner of the car who is now missing his index finger. And to add insult to injury, after the would be thieves scarper, he won't even be able to use his own car to drive away and seek help. 8-)

Great idea.

"Sorry boss, with this cough, the car won't start cos it doesn't recognise my voice, so I'll not be able to get to work for a week until my usual sweet tones are restored".

There's a slightly more considered follow-up to this at the Register: www.theregister.co.uk/2005/04/04/fingerprint_merc_.../ .

Maybe we could invent a unique device which only the owner possessed and which was essential to both entering and starting the vehicle.

Maybe we could call them keys or something like that.....

A rather scary point which came out of a document I received today..

"......problem with most biometric authentication techniques: If a registered fingerprint or eyeball is compromised - if someone succeeds in forging or spoofing it - you can't just change it like you would a password. You could use another finger, or your other eye, but there are clearly limits as to how many options you have."

Together with..........

"........Japanese cryptographer Tsutomu Matsumoto at Yokohama National University found that by making moulds out of gelatine he could reproduce a fingerprint that would fool 80 percent of commercial readers. Fingerprints on surfaces could be photographed, enhanced and etched onto circuit-board material, from which a gelatine mould could then be made; these also worked about 80 percent of the time."
