It might be easier if the engine is hot. Then you could loosen the plug and allow the engine to cool enough to change the oil.

Failing that, suck the oil out the dipstick with one of them vacuum things. They're like a pump up spray gun in reverse.

If the problem is it is rounded off, get a close fitting ring spanner (not a socket) and tap it on to the nut. This usually works. If the nut is OK just use an extension bar, but sockets seem to round off easier than spanners. When I had this problem I had all the frustration that you have. In the end I took it to a quick fit type place and he was happy to help by tapping on a close fitting spanner. You need a new sump nut and washer before they take it off. Once its done, use a spanner not a socket. Do it up with a socket and torque wrench. If you take it to Quick fit or National, they will take it off in seconds. An oil and filter change there is good value anyway. Get them to do this one, and you do the next.

Listen to the man, his advice is sound :)

Are you using the correct tool?
May require a square section wrench..

Don't forget to take a new sump plug with you though or you'll end up stranded at the garage!

Like any nut or bolt, they can be tricky to shift. I find the most common cause is some young mechanic saving his own time by doing it up with an impact wrench.

You need a well-fitting socket (often funny designs, not a regular hexagonal bolt) and a serious breaker bar. Agree that spanners are preferable as they show less tendency to round things off, but unless you're a body builder they are often of limited use because of their short length.

My old Peugeot drain plug used to need a square peg - a decent accessory shop should have one.

As all the above comments:
if it's not been shifted for a while it will need a huge effort to shift it - usually accompanied by a loud click, closely followed by whatever noise you make when you skin your knuckles.
