Hi all - a neighbour of mine's X-Type caught fire whilst parked overnight on his drive a few days ago. Apparently the Fire Brigade have ruled out foul play and it appears some sort of wiring fault in one of the rear light clusters may be to blame. Anyone come across any similar problems with these cars? Thanks as always!

I've not heard anything about the X-Type but i have heard of a few volvo's catching fire after the heated seats decided to play up.

Had heated seats on my old 940 - the only worthwhile thing about them was secretly switching the passenger one on whilst driving on a hot day and watching Mrs V start to squirm in her seat :)
Oh and before anyone says how cruel I am, she got me plenty of times too! Those were the only times we ever used them.

The only car fire i've ever dealt with a work was fairly recently A 53 reg 1.4 Golf which was totally destroyed.
Interestingly the fire started at the rear of vehicle and not fuel tank based so could have been an electrical origin. Insurance company never actually stated it's possible cause.

A family friend brought a brand new VW Polo a couple of years ago from a main dealer, she had it for a few months which in that time was having problems with electrical items. One day she was driving home from work when burning smoke was pooring from the front of the car! Her & a passenger both got out before the vehicle caught flames & was a total write off!

A mate of mine had a Fiat Uno with the Fire engine (funnily enough!) set itself alight whilst parked in a multistorey carpark.
He parked, went off to see a show and came back 3 hours later to find a couple of fire engines and a wall of foam around the car. The Firemen said it was safer to let it burn itself out!!
This Uno had some electical oddities, the last being the fire, but mainly all the lights (dashboard, interior and exterior) would die for a few seconds unexpectedly, then start working again. Never saw it myself, but was told it was pretty scary whilst driving in the dark!!

I bet X-Type Jaguars don't combust as often as the old XJ12 and XJ-Ss used to. Combine large very hot engine with twelve fuel injectors and their rubber piping, add in twelve spark plugs and their leads, distributor, some ozone, lack of maintenance. Cure is to replace fuel injection piping at the first sign of deterioration, or if you don't know when it was last replaced. It can be done by the average home mechanic, as I've done mine. The only purchase required is the fuel injection hose, as everything else is reusable. Increases your peace of mind no end.

Ford's in the process of junking the X type.

It's one thing to stop making new ones, but is it really necessary to destroy those already sold?

Yep, dropping the 2.5 V6 model (American entry level) in the US and dropping the incentives on the 3.0.
A consummate lesson on how not to enter the most competitive area of the auto market!

They seriously pitched this as an alternative to the old 5 series....get real Jaguar/Ford !
