Just wondered how many people have breakdown cover for their car. Mine is due now and after years of paying for cover on various cars and never using it, I am thinking of dropping it, of course it will be sods law to break down after I do this.

Even a short journey by an independantly summoned towtruck is going to cost you £100, so you only need to use the RAC/AA once every couple of years to be in credit.

I'm no worrier, but having the little orange RAC card in my wallet gives excellent piece of mind.

I agree with the above. I wouldn't be without breakdown cover. I've been on the family membership with my mum and dad under the AA since I passed my test and have just got cover in my own right.

So far since I learnt to drive I've only had to call them out twice, the first to take the steering lock off my car when I lost both keys in a house fire. They charged me extra for a lock smith to come out, and in the end the AA man just took a hack saw to it and 15 seconds later it was done. I'll just do that in future! The second time I called them I had to cancel them before they arrived as the car started again so I could limp it home.

As I said, I wouldn't be without it as they day I am I know I'll need it. And the yellow card will remain in my purse everytime I go out.

A few years ago SWMBO took cover for her knackered old Astra, and she used it loads. Went it finally blew up she persuaded me to continue the cover on my much newer car, despite the fact I'd never broken down.

Have kept it ever since, and have used the orange company a couple of times. Wouldn't be without cover now, having had experience of the benefits.

Try Auto Aid, £29/year covers everything including home start up to a limit of £40 or £45. Only downside is you pay and claim back. I used it for some years and the £29 covers wife's car too. I've just got a new car with cover in the price, but I'll go back to Auto Aid when this expires.I've got a number here, 01277 235700, probably office hours, but obviously call if this is of interest. The supplier also does Autonational Rescue, this is more of a traditional AA/RAC competitor I believe, this is probably why the insurance based service is not widely advertised.

If you read some of the threads above it becomes clear that having breakdown cover is, in many cases merely a comforter. I belonged to the AA for twelve years in the 1960/70s, I needed them once. Since then I have never had cover and have not required help although until recently I covered over 35K miles per annum. Do the sums, if you need a tow every five years it will cost you less than paying an annual sub to a motoring organisation. Don't forget that these companies make good money from scaring us into buying cover.
I must now demolish my argument as I have just realized that my Outback has come with 3 years roadside assistance and breakdown cover, but it is free so perhaps you will exonerate me. ;-)

Thanks Trev, I will check out the Auto Aid.

I'm with Auto Aid too. I've used them a couple of times over the years and can highly recommend them.

There are some High Street 'big banks' that offer such cover as part of their 'value accounts' and we have one. Yes you pay a small monthly fee for the account - but if you can get a decent combination to your package/cost then it certainly is worth consdiering?

Might even save you some money in the long run?

Hi,

Well I drive companies car so at the moment my Nissan is covered by the RAC. I paid the extra £50 to upgrade my Wifes new Renault Scenic AA cover to 'any event' cover so it now covers lost keys, puntures rather than just warranty breakdowns.

I have needed it twice. Once in a coursey car (when I had a Alfa). It had a punture and no locking wheel bolt in the car. DOH. Delivered the ALfa garage Coursey car back to them on the back of a AA towtruck.

Second time was when my Nissan Primera 2.2DCI deleloped an engine mangement fault. Fixed on scene by the RAC.

Third time wifes previous car (Xsara) broke down after a service. They had not fitted the fuel filter probally. Nice call to Green glag fixed that.

So in summery I would never be with out breakdown cover! Even if its a punture I would not fancy struggling with the wheel nuts changing an offside rear wheel in the rain on the M5! Much safer with a big Orange or Yellow van with flashing amber lights parked behind you.

Just my views
