My '98 Ghia x Mondeo over the last few days has developed a wierd sound coming from inside dash somewhere for a few seconds when i turn off engine/ignition.
The best way i can describe it is say having a tobacco tin half full of gravel and shaking it.
Wierd..
Anyone any ideas what it could be?

Not the heater fan spinning down is it? Sometimes they get unbalanced due to crap forming on them

Of course that is where the expression come from "when the poo hits the fan", I must have always used it out of context before though from now on if the Mondeo rattles I will say it's the poo...........

Not the heater fan spinning down is it?
don't know rf, bad sign if it is, sounds expensive and awkward to fix?
|
possibly not, could go on like that for years without any problem. Turn the fan off before you power down next time just to discount it as a cuase

Sorry about me not taking it seriously!
Is it the same whether the aircon is on or off and whether the fan is set to "0" or to "4"?
|
I virtually drive about all the time with air con on and fan at number one (very rarely use 2 3 or 4). not tried with it off or rf's advice turn off fan before powering down. i'll do some experiments tommorrow i think
thanks guys

Whenever I turn my fan to level 4 it always blows out loads of carp, so maybe that's worth the try if it is a leaf or something. But then again I don't know with these fancy cars and their pollen filters.
Maybe it's a motor/geared flap on it's way out. I'm only guessing but try all the buttons and see if you can replicate the noise with the engine running.

try the heating flaps set to off before you turn off as well they have motorised vents which can make a strange gggggrrrrrrrr thunk sound. the thunk sound is not a particularly aggressive noise...cheers...keo.

Have printed off this thread, i'll try out suggestions tommorrow in laboratory controlled experiments...
will report back..
thanks for help.

After todays carefully controlled experiments my wierd facia noise seems to becoming not from fan but the radio cassette unit (cd autochanger under seat)
Now the interesting thing about this is there's no cassette in there when it makes this noise. I don't even use cassette very often only the cd autochanger so in theory there should be no moving parts inside radio when it's in use with cd.
Also the noise gets slower and slower still it stops after about 15/20 seconds.
strange! strange! strange!
any oyher ideas?
tia.
