can you jumpstart a motorbike with a car - derek

No comment on the security guard outside, but as long as the bike is 12V (most are now) you can use jumpleads from a car.

Pays to be a bit careful and disconnect the bike battery when you're charging it from the car, as bike rectifiers can be a bit fragile.

I have done it but you need to disconnect the neg lead of the booster cables the very second the bike fires up or you'll cook the rectifier.

PS: what's a "mong"?

A mong is a slang term for an idiot to put it nicely!

Guess I've been lucky up till now when I've had to jump start the bike from the car.

I'm not well up on motorbikes, but can you not bump-start them? If so, given their lack of weight, surely that would be easier anyway?

I have jump started many a friend's motorbike from many a car, as I once did to my Hornet 600 five years ago when a faulty intercom switch (not the fantastic and highly recommended Autocom that's fitted now) flattened the battery. There wasn't even enough juice to get a spark for a push start.

Jumping has worked each time, and electrical gremlins have never ensued afterwards.

Surely this requires a running leap onto the saddle unless you have help.

It sure does, and with an 850 V-twin with 10-1 compression ratio that's not easy - especially with tankbag, panniers and rack.
Tip for Guzzi owners, go to your local motor factors and ask if you can try all of their batteries till you find a nice, heavy-duty 45ah one that fits, even if it means changing the terminals.
Half the price of the OE battery.

Not exactly, when you're sitting astride the bike you can walk it up to about 5mph. So you really need a hill to do it, just like a car.

Yes if it's your average 125cc, there is not a lot of weight to push. No if it's anything substantial my CBR1000F weighs in at about 220/230 Kg thats dry weight i.e empty tank, believe me at that weight it's easier to pop the bonnet and get the leads out.

Or you do what I saw done with a big bore Kawasaki in our High Street.

'Scuse me mate. G'issa push

Yes, I tried that with my old Honda CX500 a few years ago. Amazing how 99% of the population have back problems and are unable to give you a push!

Fair enough. It used to work on my rusty old Honda C90 when I was a kiddie :D
