The new Skoda adverts - PoloGirl
Not only do they start advertising the Fabia vRS just as I decide I want one, but now they're causing me to question the way I speak!

I pronounce Fabia with a short 'a' sound, like you get in 'fab' or sometimes with a long 'a' sound, like you get in 'cave'. On the advert though, the voice-over bloke has discovered an 'r' in the word that I hadn't noticed and pronounces it 'Farbia'. He does the same with Octavia and pronounces it Octarvia.

Have I been doing it wrong all this time?

The new Skoda adverts - Citroënian {P}
I'm with you on pronunciation - they must have hired some posh chap to do the voice over. I'm more fab than cave but then I am a Geordie so our vowels are much harsher.

Great choice of car though, did someone mention the vRS has more torque than an M5?

But aren't the 'new' Skoda commercials with that bloke being chased by a trouser press? I felt the ad. was quite stupid - no, not stupid, just pants ...

Booo! Get him off!

The new Skoda adverts - Citroënian {P}
Was reading in the paper today that they're doing another advert at the end of the month with some fat bloke performing impressive gymnastic tricks.

"Big but versatile" or something, for the Octavia vRS (or 4x4 or what ever the fast big one is)
-- Lee Having a Fabialous time.
The new Skoda adverts - Adam {P}
Whether right or wrong, I too pronounce it Farbia although just a touch shorter than you would pronounce "far" for if you see what I mean.

I pronounce Octavia like "Octeyvia" though.

I know I know. Silly.

Is it designed by Folks-vagen or Volks-wagern?
The new Skoda adverts - Adam {P}
About 5 years ago I would have said Volks-Wagen. Now I say Volks-Vagen - best of both worlds!

How many people are sat at their computers now saying car names aloud? I am!

In the old days damn foreign jobs were called

pew-ge-ot
Rey-nault
Sit-rowen

and is it ow-dee aw-dee?

And what happened to Peking?
The new Skoda adverts - Adam {P}
Again - used to say Aw-dee but now, Ow-dee.

I say Ford like....Fourd.

The new Skoda adverts - malteser
Well, I suppose I am influenced by the local language, which places the stress on the penultimate vowel, unless another one is accented in the word, so FAB I A it is for me.

No absolutly delightful spring weather today- needed air con at one
point.

Octavia Both a pronounced as a in apple.
Fabia - Pronounced in a very English way... Fa(able)bia(apple)

In our household. SWMBO has started refering to the 1 series with a very Anglo Saxon word before it...(IYKWIM)of which there

where were you?
The new Skoda adverts - mfarrow
Speaking of the way we pronounce Ford's range of vehicles, there are 80 posts on this forum with the word Foci in them (81 now!). Why? What is the problem with Focuses? At least then you're not abusing a proper noun.

Definitely Folks-vaagen. Anything else is just wrong.

Maybe I digress but has anyone else picked up on the Americanisation of the name 'Hyundai'?

Now-a-days they seem to call themselves 'hyun-day' - whereas before they were 'Hi Tech., Hi Spec. Hi-un-die'?

I first came across 'hyun-day' when in the States in Y2K, laughed my head off upon hearing their pronounciation - but we now appear to have adopted it.

Maybe darker forces are at work? ;)

No, it's the Korean pronounciation. So really the proper way to say it.

The new Skoda adverts - Avant
Good to find a kindred spirit who says Fabia with a short A! Farbia sounds awful but I think Skoda may have told their salespeople to say Farbia and Octarvia as they all seem to do it - as I discovered in a vain attempt to interest SWMBO in a VRS. That's probably how they pronounce them in their homeland.

Octavia sounds natural to me as Octayvia: not sure why - it just does.

Let us know if you finally go for one, PoloGirl. I'm sure the way we pronounce Fabia suits you better!

The new Skoda adverts - Citroënian {P}
In New Zealand a Subaru is a Sue-bahr-ew, when I first heard it I thought they were playing with the name, but they all use it. Even on Motorway Patrol.the NZ Police camera action, I know, I know...

Even more odd, the Europeans don't say Vauxhall - they say Oohpel.
-- Lee Having a Fabialous time.
The new Skoda adverts - mare
When i was a lad, and lived in Belgium, the Dutch language TV channels carried adverts for the "new" Sierra, which had just replaced the Taunus (Cortina), and they pronounced Sierra as "Sara"
The new Skoda adverts - Adam {P}
You watch "Motorway Patrol" too Lee?

You know what I'm going to say! Great mi....well. You know!

The new Skoda adverts - machika
Octavian was always pronounced with a long second a, when I was at school (and since), so I don't see why Octavia (sister to Octavian) should be different.
The new Skoda adverts - Stuartli
I've always pronounced it Octa(y)via and Fabia as in fabulous.

Been to an Arnold Clark outlet today. March 2004 Mondeo two-litre Zetec (7k) priced at £8,995 (new £17k plus); same age Skoda Octavia diesel (mileage not known) alongside at £11,995 (new £15k plus)....

I find the trouser press advert extremely annoying and, what's more, can't remember a little while later what was actually being advertised.

Same with those ads in which people SHOUT at the top of their voices. A good example is the one for double-glazing - I'd never, ever buy any product advertised in such a fashion.

You might not, but it proves the advert has worked. It has got your attention and you remember the advert/product.
You might hate the ads mainly because they annoy, but calm down it's only a commercial!
The new Skoda adverts - Stuartli
>>you remember the advert/product.>>

I don't remember the brand, only the sight of double-glazed windows and doors floating past and a very LOUD man.

Wouldn't touch which ever firm it was with the proverbial barge pole...:-)

I wouldn't use that particular company, we had them round ours to get a QUOTE, and got a VERY pushy salesman.
The new Skoda adverts - SjB {P}
Married to a Czech girl, I spend a lot of time in that country.

Missus and all her mates call it "Farbia", with no stress on any part, or more usually thanks to the complexities of the spoken Czech language (as opposed to having 'pet' names), "Farby".
The new Skoda adverts - Stuartli
It's probably due to the fact that we pronounce the first part in the way we do with similar every day use words.

But whether it's Fabia or Farbia it's still, like the Octavia, a first class vehicle. Viva VW...:-)

For completeness (though covered here some time ago), Skoda is actually ?koda, pronounced Shkoda.
The new Skoda adverts - trancer
Maybe the guy who added the "R" to Fabia is the same one who added it to Peugeot. You lot quickly caught onto to "Per-geot", so "Farbia" as the accepted pronounciation can't be far behind.

I also notice lots of people say/write brought as in, "I just brought a new car today". Why the infatuation with the letter R 8-).

"I don't remember the brand, only the sight of double-glazed windows and doors floating past and a very LOUD man."

Ahhh, Safestyle UK..."I said, you buy one, you get one free...call now!!!" 8-)

I know what you mean stuart. A co-worker was recently shopping around for new exterior doors and particularly tried to avoid said company as he too thought the ads ridiculous. He wound up calling them last after getting some ridiculous quotes and they were close to half the price of the other places. They get installed today!.

Precisely. What's more, we can sort of expand it even further:
In Polish - which is somewhat similiar to Czech - ?koda (pronounced "Shkoda") actually has two meanings:
1) "What a pity"
2) "harm", "hurt", "injury"

Yeah, don't laugh...
BTW: How do you guys pronounce KIA ?

If you search the Forum I think you'll already find that I already made the first point. I found it equally amusing though when my (Czech) wife taught me! ;-)

Key Ah

Don't say it's meant to be Ky Ah.

The new Skoda adverts - SjB {P}
The word KIA comes from Chinese (Mandarin or other I know not), of which the KI means "to arise from" and the A means "Asia".

How you say it though I can only guess, so guess I will; Keyah is too obvious, so Kiyah?
The new Skoda adverts - Stuartli
I've always pronounced it Key Ah as well, just as its top UK brass did whenever I'd been in their company.
