My Mk4 Golf's heater/ventilation panel is not lighting up now. (This is the Aircon but not climate control type). The Aircon button/recirculation button are light up when pressed but the hot/cold, direction and blower speed are not.
Any clues as to where to look. It all works but I can't see what I'm doing at night!!
I suspect a dodgy wire but don't want to take it all apart...
Thanks in advance!

Haynes Golf/Bora manual observations:
"The heater/ventilation control panel is lit by LEDs built into the panel and, if faulty, panel replacement is necessary.
"The centre rotary control, however, is lit by a bulb and if you pull the control out from the panel carefully, you can use a length of washer tube or something similar to pull out the capless bulb. Fitting the bulb is a reversal of this procedure.
"The switch illumination bulbs are integral with the switches and if a bulb fails the complete switch has to be replaced."

Hi
I dont have airconditionong on my Golf but if the capless bulb fails as it did with me you lose illumination to the heater controls as you describe.
In my case replacing the capless bulb solved the problem - to do so carefully pull off the blower speed control dial. It can be stiff but when you do so the capless bulb can be seen down a long tube. It is awkward to remove and replace. I used some plastic tubing from a soap dispenser to remove and replace. I think it is a 1 watt bulb.
Best of luck.

Isn't that exactly what the Haynes manual information I provided details?

The difference is that the capless bulb lights the whole panel not just the rotary control.

Before we have any "handbags at dawn" you're both right and the Haynes manual is wrong as it looks as though a single bulbs light is spread around the whole of the heater unit.
I eventually removed the blower switch with a pair of pliers and replaced the small bulb. I couldn't get it out without breaking it though !! and I have to hoover up the debris.
thanks for the help....
