I found something stuffed in my exhaust and pulled it but some is left in and i had a poke but it still seems to be there for good. I really dont know what to do.

What kind of stuff is it? If it's soluble I'd try to push a hosepipe in behind it and flush it out, preferably on a slope. But I've never had this problem so am only guessing.
|
it looked like fir but not really sure. i have driven the car but dont know what will happen if i carry on
|
Fur as in an animal or fir as in bits of a tree? Are you sure something furry hasn't crawled in and...expired?

it looks like a lump of fir not fir cone but no bones thought
|
Very strange. How is it stuck in? Is it like a sticky mess or what then?

Maybe something's tried to make a nest in there. I wouldn't worry about it if it isn't causing problems, but if you're suffering from loss of grunt at high revs then I'd deal with it. Probably need a new back box if so, unless a garage can shake it out.

Used to be stories in 60's of kids using exhaust like a giant spud gun; pushing a potato in/on exhuast so it was forced out when the engine started.
If it's a fircone whats the risk if you just ignore it?
|
I passed a car today. Someone had stuffed tree cuttings into exhaust tailpipe(may have been grass cuttings)Pretty thick though.I suspect it will get blown out when engine started up..General idea is for engine to stall.Possibly someone they didnt like??

You have not reversed into an earth bank or similar and just ramned whatever the bank was made of up the tail pipe. Have seen this done many a time when vehicles reversing in rural car parks.

"Used to be stories in 60's of kids using exhaust like a giant spud gun; pushing a potato in/on exhuast so it was forced out when the engine started."
It wasn't me and if it was you'll never prove it !
|
LOL, sounds like it's breaking up. and the sound deadening is being blown out. This usally looks like a horse's tail, but is glass fibres. See if you can burn the fur with a match, if not it is probably sound deadening, if it burns and smells like burning hair, I think someone has played a joke, and it will probably blow out on a long run!
Good luck!

Not sure I like the idea of sticking a match to it.
Could you not just suck it out with the nozzle of a hoover?
|
"Not sure I like the idea of sticking a match to it. "
- Don't worry, I'm sure whatever it is is already dead.
Cut a bit off and try it then.
The stuff I'm thinking of is between double-skins of the silencer boxes.

The Chrome plated Raydot exhaust deflector mentioned in a previous thread might have helped in this case.
Little brats can't stuff a spud into it, and reversing into a pile of earth won't block it. Well worth a couple of quid.

Oh, one Christmas we did that to all the teachers' cars at school.
Then a gang of us lifted the geography teacher's Austin 7 inside the school hall, put it on the stage and covered it with toilet rolls.
But that's a tale for another time.....
|
Are you sure you haven't been misbehaving and someone has pushed a potato up your exhaust to teach you a lesson??!!
|
"Austin 7 inside the school hall, put it on the stage and covered it with toilet rolls."
Thank God the strongest thing we smoked was Players at our school !

{moved to the existing thread as it's all related}
what you said on the 'something stuck up my exhaust' sound right but if it is what do i need to do is it bust
|
It is the "stuffing" in the box making a bid for freedom. It means that the metal grill which traps it inside is breaking up. Basically the box needs replacing.
Rishab C, not trying to tread on your toes, I just happened to be here.
|
LOL, yes you can live with it, or replace the box.
I only know as about 5-6 years ago, I was going along the A1 in my then Mazda 626, and there was an almighty bang, followed by a dreadful rough sound, I pulled over imagining that my engine had destroyed itself, only to see what looked like long blonde hair coming out the exhaust, like a woman had got sucked in the air intake and was stuck in the exhaust! For a second my heart stopped! The back box had broken up inside and blocked itself and at that speed the pressure blew it open. I posted on the Mazda 626 board and was told it was the sound deadening.

Reminds me of the bit in Pete McCarthy's book McCarthy's Bar where he think a bird has got stuck up the exhaust pipe of his old Volvo and it turns out to be the contents of the silencer coming adrift and poking out the tailpipe :-)
