How much is the normal diesel? (I.e. - stuff that's no different but cheaper ;-)

Up here, diesel's about 89p last time I filled up.

I always keep a track of the fuel I put in my cars (always have since my first car in 1980! - sad innit) including the price and diesel has gone from 84.9 to 91.9 from early Feb to last night.

Having said that it was 87.9 in December!

I'm just curious to see at what point the long-suffering Brits say enough is enough!

I very nearly fell out of my cab the other day. Usually I fill lorries up on diesel pumps in the yard. For one reason or another, I had to use a BP services on the M1. £350 per tank. Their's two of the things as well. Shame they wouldn't give me the points really.

Personally I use my motorcycle whenever I can. £10 to fill the tank for 180 miles instead of £35 for unleaded in the car. Apparently the price of diesel is so high because the US have had a bad winter and used a lot of their reserves of crude oil. I wonder why they're talking about invading Syria?

I can't see that point being too far off.

350 a tank??? I thought I was bad with 40!

I wonder how long it will be before petrols become more economical than diesels (taking into the account the better consumption).

I can't see that point being too far off either.

I don't think this time will ever come.

The basic principles behind diesel engines and the fuel itself means that diesel engines are always more thermodynamically efficient at any time tham petrols.

A more likely prediction is that when 70% of cars sold are diesels, the good old chancellor will make diesel 30% more expensive tham petrol, as the average diesel is 30% more economical than the equivalent average petrol car !

Only so much diesel/heating oil can be refined from each barrel of crude. If the demand continues to rise the price will too, like what is happening now.

SWIMBO just got a TDI Touran. There is no contest, even if petrol is cheaper, the extra grunt is well worth it.
diesel - Sprice
The extra grunt is down to the turbo charger, if all petrol cars were turbo'd like diesels are, there would be no comparison!

I think Adski means that at which point will it be better on your pocket to run a petrol instead of a diesel. It used to be that you got a diesel for the lower running costs (it used less fuel, which was cheaper or the same price as petrol).

However, now the price of diesel has shot up, along with the MPG of petrol engines, it's soon going to be cheaper to fill up your petrol slightly more often, but at a reduced price, that you're spending less than you would on a comparable diesel car.

Cheers Jesse - that's exactly what I meant.

Yes, but diesel angines have turbos and still do 50 mpg+. Stick a turbo on a petrol and fuel economy really can suffer. I've just read an article on a back to back test of two Audi A6s one with the 3.2 V6, the other the 2.0 TDi. For straight line standing start speed the V6 wins hands down - 7 secs quicker to 100 mph, but in real world motoring of in gear acceleration from speeds like 30-50, 50-70 etc the cars are virtually identical, but the diesel does 40+ mpg and the V6 less than 30. The diesel also costs less to buy.

Not just Audi A6, but the new Alfa Romeo GT JTD diesel is the cheapest engine option on offer. If you want a petrol it will cost you more than the diesel.

We found the 1.9 105hp Touran TDI actually cheaper to buy than the 1.6fsi petrol because of an offer VW were doing and as the dealer wanted to shift some TDIs for his bonus he lopped more off it so it was cheaper than the petol model (we asked for qoutes on both).

The dealer was even cheaper then the internet offers on here and elsewhere!!!!!

We even got a free 6 disk multichanger fitted due to a factory error :-))
