I'm suprised no-one has posted this yet but it looks like bad news down at Ryton.

I'm afraid news of this type is so common nowadays that it goes largely unnoticed. A terrible thing for all involved but it's not just Peugeot who are struggling it's most of the multi national car makers IMO.
Too many car for too few buyers.. whose to blame?

Did Peugeot ever satisfactorily answer the BBC Watchdog complaints about 206s?
Yes they did, on an individual case basis, for all customers who got in contact with Customer Services.
But that's not sensationalist enough for Campbell etc to shout it from the rooftops.
|
My understanding was, that the job cuts are due to sales figures in Europe (not the UK) falling with the 206.
As said earlier too much choice to too few buyers.

I experienced my worst customer service ever from Peugeot - they came across as if they simply didn't give a toss.
I didn't even look at 407 when I replaced my 406, and my daughter wanted to look at 206 for her recent car (which I partially funded) & I wouldn't let her.

>I wouldn't let her<. !! that sounds a bit un-PC. Do you mean you advised against it? :o)

'Too many car for too few buyers'
You only have to look around the country,to see that this is,indeed correct.
Keep your eyes open for fields full of cars from all manufacturers, not just Peugeot.

It doesn't help Ryton's case that the 206 is now a bit long in the tooth. A good car in its day, but should have been replaced by now. Peugeot, like a lot of manufacturers, seem to reduce development costs by stretching the lifespan of their models until they are just not attractive to buyers.
|
I seem to remember Ryton going on strike a few years ago when Peugeot tried to introduce French-style summer holidays, were they closed the factory down for two weeks.
I wonder if this has anything to do with Peugeot's decision?

>>A good car in its day....
Due to previously mentioned probs with my 406 I've driven many wks and many miles in 206's. I'm not a car snob and I have no problem driving a 206 back & to the garage for the day but to expect me to drive thousands of miles in one was (IMHO) unacceptable.
However, I felt the 206 was never a good car - especially on first encounter. The driving position is wierd and it's stunningly noisy. It actually seems to get better (or you just get used to it) the longer you drive it, but it's saying something when getting back into a 406 (even one that doesn't work properly) fills you with unalloyed joy.
|
IIRC 206's came out for S Registration which I think was about 1998. It is now 2005 and the car still looks the same to me. 7 years is awful long to keep a car unchanged, or even un "facelifted".
Especially when all around you are updating their models.
|
|
Launched October 1998 in UK, so it's not yet 6½ years old. Certainly overdue for a facelift, but a bit early for replacement? I agree about the driving position, but clearly a lot of others are happy with it.

The Focus has been facelifted and replaced in the same amount of time.

I thought the 206 had a minor facelift...well - a nip and a tuck. The newer ones I see seem to have different tail lights (in the way they light up not the shape of them) and clear headlight glass?
